NEW EXPERIMENTS WITH TUB MONGOOSE.
I have, when in India, where I
have served for upward to ten years,
been present at experiments with
poisonous snakes. The mongoose
and the eut, I ean safely aver, if fair
ly bitten, have on more immunity
from snake poison than any other
animal. The mongoose, simply by
its greater activity, is enabled to
overcome poisonous reptiles, I will
give one or two instances of experi
ments to verify the above at which 1
was present. The ox[>eriments were
conducted in a barrack-room with
closed doors, so as not to allow any
inode of exit by a medical officer, in
the presence of myself and one other
gentleman. First a huge cobra was
set at liberty in the aforesaid room,
and a tame "mongoose belonging to-a
soldier. The mongoose, on seeing
the snake, at once went toward it:
on which the cobra displayed fear,
and tried to get away. It was not un
til the mongoose nipped the tail of
the cobra that the latter showed
llliht. As soon, however, us the cobra
struck at the mongoose, the latter,
bv superior activity, seized the rep
tile by tlie head and at once set to
work and extracted a fang, which
the animal swallowed. The mon
goose then released its hold, trotted,
or to speak more correctly, ran once
or twice round the room, leaving the
snake to itself for four or live min
utes, when it again uttaetked the co
bra without any interference on our
part, the same performance as before
being repeated, and the remaining
fane extracted. The cobra, although
so grievously wounded, on being re
leased by the mongoose a second
time, attacked it with great ferocity.
The latter animal treated it much in
the same way as a cat would treat a
mouse. Finally, again having seized
the cobra, set to and eat the head
only, leaving the rest of the body un
touched. This I think, shows con
clusively that the reptile was over
come by superior acitvity. Experi
ment No 2: A wild mongoose recent
ly caught was put to a cobra, both
reptile and animal being held. The
snake was made to fairly bite the
mongoose, which was then released,
but unfortunately lost sight of.
It, was found dead next morning.
Experiment No. 3 was on a cat, which
was at lirst let loose in the room with
a fresh cobra. Both displayed fear
of one another, and could not be
brought to approach. Ultimately
snake and cat were both held, and
ttie former made to bite the latter in
tlie thigh. The eat showed no signs
of being affected for nearly an hotfr.
It was then given in charge to a
native sweeper, who reported the oat 1
as verv sick an hour and a half after,
ft died within four hours after being
bitten. Experiments were also tried
on pariah dogs, both without inject
ing ammonia. In all eases the dogs :
died, those which were epidemically
injected surviving from a quarter to
a half hour longer than the others |
not so treated. The exhaustive expe- j
riments of Drs. Fayer and Richards, j
under the authority of the Govern- j
ment of India, I think, have eonclu- j
siveiy settled the point as regards the !
incurability of snake-bites. With I
regard to mongooses, I have seen ]
them put to light snakes on several
occasions, and whene'er the mon
goose attacks the snake it invaii-:
ably overcame the latter by superior I
activity. A mongoose which Ims
been lately fed persistently refuses to [
attack a snake, although never
showing the slightest fear in its pres
ence.

■’laying: The Tool.
A nice young man was at a social
tlie other night and was very profuse j
in his exhibitions of unanimous j
knowledge. There was nothing in !
tlie range of tlie sciences that he j
didn’t know, but. he was particular:
hefty ou music. lie knew till about
tlie harmony of ffbunds. and could
play on almost; anything. An old
gentleman becoming disgusted with
t lie blood’spretentionß,remarkedthut
lie couldn’t play himself, but lie un
derstood the theory of-music so well j
that he could tell what tune a person i
was lingering by the motions with-1
out hearing the sounds. This so as-j
tonished tire young man that he pro-1
posed to test this wonderful power of j
his elder, and at once drew up to a!
table, and began to gently finger as
if upon a key-board, remarking that
tie was now going through tin- mo
tion of a popular air, and asked the
old man:
“What am I playing now?”
The old gent, winked at the girls, j
and blandly remarked:
"Ithink you’re playing the darned
fool, if you arc making the right mo
tions!”
While the girls were trying to mas
ticate their handkerchiefs tile young
man left.
