bv i hi: commissioners of agricult the.
Eighty per cent, of the correspond
ents report cotton picking as well
advanced as at, the same time last
your. Many report it from 25 to 5U
per cent, more advanced. Many in
South Georgia report the crop nearly
all picked, and some say all. This is
in consequence of the severe drouth
in September, Which cut off the top
crop. ,
These facts combined with the
great scarcity of money, have forced
cotton forward upon the market more
rapidly than usual. The large receipts
are, therefore, not a correct indica
tion of the crop made.
Sixty-three per cent, of lhi 1 cor
respondents report the cotton saved
in as good condition as last year.
The average cost of producing a
bushel of corn in Georgia, under the
present adverse circumstance*, is re
ported at fiyty-eight cents, or a little
more than one rent per pound while
the average cash price, at which it
lias sold in Georgia for several years,
has been about two cents per pound
and the credit price from two awl a
half to three cent* per pound.
Is it not remarkable that farmers
prefer paying twice or three timfs as
much for Western corn as that raised
on their own farms eosis them, in
order that they may enjoy the pleas
ure of raising cotton to sell at less
than cost of production. The above
facts are a severe commentary on the
financial conduct of corn buyers in
Georgia.
Again, oats are produced in Geor
gia at an average cost of twenty-nine
cents per bushel, or less than one
cent per pound, which is Ices than
one-third the average price at which
they have 9old in Georgia for some
years.
Will farmers continue to buy corn
and oats at th ree t imes the cost of rais
ing them on their own farms?
Taking into consideration the cost,
of production, the chemical analysis
and the comparative freedom steal
age, oats are cheaper as stock food
than corn.
One bushel, or 56 pounds of corn,
costs 58 cents, while one bushel, or
32 pounds of oats costs 29 cents, mak
ing a difference of 13 cents in the cost
of 100 pounds of the two.
Chemical analysis shows that oats
contain 12 per cent, of albuminoids,
or flesh and muscle producing prin
ciple, while corn contains 10 per
cent.* It will thus be seen that for
work animals oats are more valua
ble than corn as food when equal
weights are used.
Consider, now, that 100 pounds of
oats costs 13 cents less than 100
pounds of corn, and tlie case stands
decidedly in favor of oats for work
stock.
In fat producing properties corn
has 7 per cent,; oats 6 per cent.t
It, will bo seen, therefore, that
when equal weights only arc com
pared, corn has the advantage as a
fat producer, out tuking the cost also
into consideration, there is no choice
in this respect.
Another decided advantage of oats
for our climate, and especially for
summer use, is that, while they suit
ply more muscle, they are less heat
ing and more invigorating to the
work animal consuming them. Still
another advantage, is freedom from
rotten grain and weavil, which fre
quently cause corn to injure stock.
Still another item id favor of oats is
that freed men do not eat them, nor
can they so readily sell them when
stolen.
The average cost of a pound of cot
ton to the producer is reported at
eleven cents, which varies very little
from the average selling price, on the
farm, of the present crop.
This corresponds with the fact that
ninety-six per cent, of the correspon
dents report that cotton cannot lie
raised at a profit on bought supplies.
