DAYS OF MY YOt Til. The following touching lines were written by the elder St. George Tuck er, (step-father of Mr. Randolph,) and It is said that they so affected John Adams in his old ago that he declared he would rather have writ ten them than any lyric of Milton or Shukspeare: Day* of my yonth, y have glided away, Hairs of ruy youth, ye are frosted and gray; Eyes of my youth, your keen sight is no mre; Cheeks of my youth, ye are furrowed all o*er; Rtreugth of my yaqth. all your vigor is gone; Thoughts of my youth, your gay vision ia flown. Days of my yonth, I wish not your recall, Hairs of my youth. I*m content ye shall fell; Eyes of my youth, you much evil have seen. Cheeks of my youth, bathed in tears yea have been; Thoughts of my youth, ye have led me astray, Strength of my youth, why lament your decay? Days of my age, ye will shortly be passed, Pains of my age. yet awhile you can last; Joys of my age, in true wisdom delight. Eyes of my age, be religion your light; Thoughts of my age, dread ye not the cold sod. Hopes of my age, be ye fixed on your God. f\DITIO> OF tiKOßhll FARMER*, On October 15, 18?5. BY THE COMMISSIONERS OF AGRICULTURE. Eighty-four per cent, says that cot ton can be raised at a profit ot pres ent prices on supplies made at home. This is readily understood, in view of the facts that bought corn and oats cost from two to three times us much as home-made; that, as report ed by correspondents, only 47 per cent, of a home supplv or pork is readily in the State, and that, while it costs an average of s6u per head to raise a mule or horse on the farm.fl,- 000,780 were expended last season in their purchase from drovers, at an average cost per head of more than twice the cost of raising them. Notwithstanding this enormous annunl outlay in horses and mules, aud the fact that it coats only soo to raise them to.three years old, only 6.- 033 are reported annually foaled in the State. 81 i>er cent, of the correspondents report that farmers are increasing their stock of hogs with a view to raising more pork next year, but re part a general complaint of stealage as the principal obstacle to raising pork. There Is also much complaint J of loss by cholera. Others report deficient fencing, and consequent inability to utilize their pasturage. The average cost of ginning cotton by mule power, is reported at 75 cents per hundred pounds of lint; by steam power, at 50 cents i>er 100, and by water power, at 4o cents. 28 gin houses were burned by incen diary, and 15 by accidental tires. The loss by incendiary fires is reported at $45,420, and by accidental, at $24,800. 476 bales of cotton are reported burn ed by these fires, all of which occur red between Oct. Ist, 1874, and Octo ber Ist, 1875. Free juieu are reported indebted to farmers aud merchants for supplies advanced them last year, $1,465,700. This is not surprising, since, in the July report, 42 per cent, of the farm ers who employ labor for a part of the crop, are reported as giving one half of the crop as compensation for, the labor. The practice, too, of renting lund to | irresponsible freedmen, who gener ally must be supplied in advance , with stock, implements, fertilizers, and food for themselves and fami lies as well as for their stock, is nu anomaly in the history of business ' transactions. Not only is the capital advanced to them and valuable property entrust ed to them, but the entire manage ment of the farm left to them. It is not reasonable to suppose that, men, naturally indolent/ ignorant and superstitious, mere muscular au tomata by habit, having been accus tomed to direction even in the minu tia of their work, could, by a presi dential proclamation, be converted into intelligent aud reliable business managers. As well might the <w>m monest soldier in the ranks be ex pected to skillfully manoeuvre to day the army of which he was but yesterday an integral part. No such reckless risks are taken in any other business, nor could any long exist un der such management. [Note by the Editor.—Commis sioner Janes estimates the loss from thirty-three gin houses destroyed by fire to be $70,220. Since the number destroyed was ninety-eight or ninety nine, the amount thus lost by the farmers of the State in one year was s2lo,66o—which, we think, is a very low estimate.] I.namrlrd Ollliur" A refreshment saloon in London lias been finished inside in such a manner as to be readily washed out with a hose. The floor is paved, the wiill is of majolica, arid the celling is covered with enameled sheet iron. When it is desired to clean the room, the furniture is removed, the hose is laid on, ami the place is siinply drenched and flooded till clean. The ceiling is the novet feature of the room. To prepare it, large pieces of sheet iron were coated white with enamel in the usual manner, and were then handsomely painted in colors. After baking to secure the colors, the sheets vvere affixed to the beams of the floor overhead: The joints are made to fit tight, and once in place, the enameled plates will last as long as the building stands. This style of ceiling is partially fire-proof, anil saves ail the exjiense, repairs and danger of lathes and plaster. There is no patent on this system of ceilings, and any enameling firm may make the sheets in plain eolors, clear white, or in patterns to fit any refreshment-room, bath-room, laun dry, dairy, or other room where a washable oeiiing is desired.' “Where’s the molasses, Bill?” said a woman sharply to her son, who had returned with an empty jug. “None iu the city, mother. Every grocery has a big black board outside with the letters, ‘N. O. Molasses.’ ” " 1 -„'lS "J ..'1 For Deputy Marshal. 1 announce tnyoaif for the office of Deputy Marshal of the city of Columbus.
