A BOW BKX A DEM. rBOM THE fRUMkV. Aobu Ben Adorn, may his tribe Increase! Awoke one night from a sweet dream of peace, And saw by the moonlight in hia room, Making it bright and like a lily in bloom; A spirit writing in a book of gold~- Kiceediug peace bad made Ben Adam bold, And to the pretence in the room he Haul : • What wriUt thou,”? ~ The angel raised its head, Aud in,a voice made all of tweet accord. Answered, ‘'the names of those that love the Lord." “And is mine one ?“ said Adem. “Nay, not so,” Replied the angel; Adem still spake low, But cheerily said. “I pray thee. then. Write me as one who loves his fellow men." The spirit wrots and vanished; the following night It came again with great and wak’ning light, And showed the names of those whom God had blessed, And lot Ben Adem’s name lad all the reatf Want of ttastt. Judging by her dress—that sure in dex to feminine character, someone says—the average German woman is absolutely devoid of taste. Of the harmony of well-chosen, low-toned tints; of unity of effect in the corres ponding shades of gloves, parasol, and bonnet, or the judicious juxtapo sition of dark and light; of a dash of color on a sober background; she knows nothing, and her clothes are not only ugly but inappropriate. This want of taste is particularly no ticeable In elderly women. The hair once thick is now thin, the neck once round aud white now coarse and red, the delicacy of feature and complex ion a thing of the past; all is hard, used, prosaic. The French-woman puffs her delicate gray hair into feathery curls, hides the hollows and repairs the ravages of time with cas cades of lace; lends a little false bloom to the faded face, perhaps, and wears delicately tinted ribbons. En glish aud American ladies follow in the same train. But the German woman never dreams of improving her personal ap pearance by concealing the ravages of time, ana shows her bold patches, her unattractive throat, her awkward figure, without disguise and remorse. No cap covers the wisp of hair that is all that is left to her. Her coarse collars aud frills are carelessly ar ranged—her plain gown destitute of lace or ribbon. What does it mat ter? she thinks. Her life is over— the gayer part, of it, at least; and per sonal vanity being extinct, it doesn't occur to her to make herself attract ive to others by a graceful and well urrangedtoilet. In this she commits a grievous error; for while younger folks can afford to be careless, the elderly woman should be scrupulous in her dress —even a little elaborate - lest her carelessness be attributed not so much t<j a lack of vanity as a want of seif-respect or a habit of slovenliness. Preferred Papeb.—A fanner pre sented a eheek at one of the Kings ton, Canada banks for cashing on Wednesday. The amount for which the cheek called being large the tel ler, to save his bills, was paying part in sovereigns, which the farmer, how ever, refused when they were pushed toward him. “Why?” asked the bank clerk. “Bekuse itsgolngdown. I read in a New York paper that gould was declinin’. It’s not good. I’ll take bills if you plase.” He was accommodated. “Well, well; if the time has come when the ‘fast males’ must have a train of cars to themselves I am glad I am an old woman and havn’t long to stay in this sinful world.’’ and Aunt Betsev wiped the end of her nose on her best handkerchief. The family man who doesn’t expect at least fourteen of his relatives to help him devour his Thanksgiving turkey can’t feel one single throb of happiness in looking forward to the 25th. When you find a New Hampshire woman who doesn’t believe that u mustard plaster will cure any and every disease in the calendar you will find a curiosity greater than the woolly horse. Non fist—The man who can tie a bow-knot and the woman who can sharpen a lead pencil. ,1 - ■ “Bare t<* be wise; and now Bogin: the man who has it in bin power To practice virtue, aud puta off the hour, Wait*, like the clown, to se* 1 the brook run low, Whit-fa onward flow*, and will forever Row.*’ For Deputy Marshal. jfjr 1 Announce myself tor the office of Deputy Marshal of the city of Columbia*. Arc. NEVROII ItKIiIMTI. The Press, the Pulpit ami the Lecture room are silent on the subject of this disease. A false delicacy withholds a knowledge in regard to vio lation of Physiological Laws, and life-wrecks shattered humanity, insanity, and premature graves fill the world. No race, nation or posi tion is exempt from the soul-destroying scourge. Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles, trembling of the limbs, poor appetite, easily dis turbed by noise or excitement, pimples aud blotches on the face, desire to avoid company, pe culiar sensation over the whole body are among the difficulties which attend this complaint. The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills will iu u short time so cleanse the blood and soothe the nerves, aud restore strength to the body, as to make life enjoyable and happy. EPILEPSY OH FITS. No other remedy will cure Epilepsy or Fitß so quickly as the Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills. Kidney Diseases and many other difficulties are cured by the use of the Cordial Balm of Syrup aud Tonic Pill;#. If the watery portions of our food are not pass ed olf, they must, when retained in the system, produce serious difficulties. Language fails when attempting to describe the sufferings of per sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel, back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the result if the water is not regularly and properly carried through the kidneys. The Cordial Balm of Syricum is effectual in promoting the secretion of the wa tery and unnutritiouM portions of the food, and iu carrying it off by its proper outlets. Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable should be passed off in the water in sweat, and from the bowels. If these useless matters are retained disease is sure to follow, for then the blood becomes poisoned with the impurities which should pass off in their proper channels. The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills is a powerful cleanser of the blood: it Htarts the liver and kidneys into active operation, aud acts on all the secretions of the body. It carries off old and foul elements in the blood, which are slow and sure death if allowed to remain in the system. DH. UISirKJSKrESS. THE CORDIAL BALM OF SYRI CUM AND TONIC PILLS is the only remedy that has ever proved by prac tical experience a benefit to those who suffer from over-indulgence iu Alcoholic Liquors, it com pletely destroys the tastes for them, and restores the victim to health and vigor. A single trial will prove it to bo lust what it is recommended to be. MOHPHXKTE3. THE CORDIAL BALM OF HYRI CH M AND TONIC PILLS iH a sure cure for the habitual use of Mor phine, so extensively used in this country as a stimulant. It will iu a very short time com pletely destroy the desire for this narcototic. We have many testimonials from the first fami lies in Europe and America, who testify to its efficacy. OPIUM. The alarming increase of the use of this most pernicious drug as a stimulant, by male aud fe male, and its peculiar effects, completely destroy ing the digestive apparatus aud shattering the nervous system, effeminating and debasing the mind, renders The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills of inestimable value, as it completely destroys ail desire for this most baneful drug, and restores the nerves to a perfectly healthy state, even in cases where opium has been used in large quanti ties aud for a number of years, [Davenport Democrat. Some from congenial dis ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to bacco, Buffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous excitement—all of which can be removed and per manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor dial Balm of Syricum, which has long been in the old country the favorite remedy, and which, since its introduction Into this country, has dis tanced all other medicine* having the same ob ject in view.
