V stltHTi-edcd. Within twenty years the taming eaiMicitv of ocean steamers have been doubled, their expenses halved, aim their speed greatly increased; this has been done by the screw, the com pound engine and sujierheatpd steam. On land the locomotive lias been won derfully improved, and within the same period nearly sixty thousand miles of Iron road have been con structed for its use in this countrv alone. When we tefieet that neurit four-fifth* of our entire system ol railways have been constructed with in this'brief iieriod, and that the use of the telegraph has increased in n still greater ratio, we can begin to re alize that we are progressing at a rate which, if any stand still, soon leaves them far behind. Springing into existence us it has, it would be strange if there were not defects and inequalities in our transportation sys tem. New York Grocer. Utiliziso CiOAtt Stumps in Paris. A profession which isextensivel.vear riMt on in Paris is that of the cigar picker. The duties innereut to thi.- singulur pursuit consist in picking up the ends of cigars dropped almui the streets during the day. At night the gentlemen who follow thiseareei couvey their spoil to the borders o> the Seine, where they sort the bits ol cigars according to quality, and mince them iuto tobacco, which they then retail to street-sweepers, to cbiionuiers, and other street labor ers, at the rate of about two trains' and a half per pound. Cigar-picking is the vocation of about two hundred Parisians, who manage to earn alive lihood about equal to that of an av erage workman, namely, from ;; francs 50 cents to 5 francs per day. It is related of the Prince Imperial of France, that while sitting fora statue to Corponuz, the sculptor, late ly deceased, lie became a student oi art. Three subjects were modeled l>> him namely, u lancer on horseback, a bust of the Emperor and another of M. Mouuier, the tutor of the Prince. Galignaui says that the works were, if not perfect, remarkable, when the extreme yout h of the author is taken into the account. TO DEMOCRATIC PAPERS.
