Wn were honored with n call yes
terday, from Mr, Win. I’. Coleman,
Superintendent of tho Louisville Ky.,
Rolling Mills Cos. Mr. Coleman Is u
most agreeable and accomplished
gentleman.
Col. Jack Butt, the advance ugent
for the celebrated Montgomery ope
ra troupe, was in the city yesterday,
making arrangements for the exhi
bition of the troupe Wednesday
night.
Alahamiash! remember to-day to
vote for tho now Constitution.
A society for tho propagation of
Buddhism throughout the world has
been formed In Chinn.
Alabama proposes to send to tho
United States Senate the Hon. L. I’.
Walker, first Confederate Secretary
of War.
It is estimated that tho cotton crop
of South Carolina this year will bo
about 325,000 bales, against 400,000
bales last year.
Is England they are going to give
n married woman her own property,
and, as an offset, make her responsi
ble for her own debts.
The failures for tho past nine
months aggregated $131,171,000, That
sum represents exactly the contrac
tion of capital during the time speci
fied.
The Montgomery Advertiser says
thore aro thousands of pounds of hay
received every day in that city. It
is sold rapidly at forty-five cents per
hundred.
If you would bo freo, and would
shake off every vestige of Radical
tyranny, Alabamians must go to the
polls to-day and vote for the new
Constitution.
Jefferson Davis hits accepted the
Presidency of tho American Depart
ment of tho Mississippi Valley Soci
ety, of London, tendered him by the
President of the organization.
—— —* ♦
A Home Thrust.— Tho Nashville
American says that Grant, with a
foreigner for a son-in-law, is a very
protwr person to stand at tho head of
the proposed Native American move
ment.
The loss of cotton this year, for
want of picking, is estimated by an
exchange at five million dollars in
gold. That is what polical canvass
ing has cost, and the negro loses his
share.
Dr. Janes says the average cost of
ginning cotton by mule power, Is re
ported at 75 cents per ono hundred
pounds of lint; by steam power, at
50 cents, and by water-power, at 40
cents per ono hundred pounds.
A Cheat Waste of Cast Iron.— Tho
boundary lino in tho far Northwest
is being, marked by cast iron pillars,
oight feet high, set in the ground four
foot, at distances of a mile from each
other. The English nnd American
governments set the posts alternate
ly.
Cheat Kitten Drowning. The
Courier-Journal proposing that the
Inflation kittens In Ohio should bo
drowned, is reminded by tho Mont
gomery Advertiser that there are 192,-
000 of them, and a great many sacks
will be needed.
Forest Lands.— The area of forest
lands in the United States is 380,000,-
000 acres. Of this amount it Is esti
mated that 5,500,000 forest trees are
consumed for fuel, manufacturing
purposes, railroad ties, etc., every
year; which rate of consumption will
exhaust tho forest nrea in nbout sev
enty years.
The Rome Courier well says;
“No true journal ean become tho or
gan of small rings or cliques, wheth
er In politics or loss important mat
ters. Tho true journal Is tho advo
cate of right and justice, and cannot
be- bought with “filthy lucre,” If a
bold and honest press onunot be sus
tained In a community such a com
munity does not deserve a press.”
Cost of Government.— lt cost last
year to carry on the Government of
the United States the sum of $274,-
023,302. This includes the payment
of interest on the debt, amounting to
$103,093,544. Wo have, therefore, for
the actual expense of the Depart
ments, $171,529,810. This is three
times the cost of the same depart
ments the year before the war.
The Mobile Register advocates the
opening of the Coosa river for navi
gation to the Shelby coal fields. The
estimated cost of tho work is ono
million dollars. Placing tho freight
at $1 per ton, it would make tho
charges much less than those upon
bituminous coal from the Atlantic
coast mines to the seaboard. The
price of the latter would be $5; the
price of the coal from tho Shelby
fields $3 5U to $4 per ton.
The Opelika Times puts in its claim
as the most level-headed weekly pa
per in Alabama, by the following an
nouncement:
“Any of our city or country read
ers, wishing a first class Daily Dem
ocratic journal, cun never do better
thau to subscribe for the Oolumbcs
Times. It is the lowest priced daily
(only $6 per annum.) published, and
one of the best and most invaluable
of all our exchanges.’’
Go to the polls to-day, work hard,
and save your State from Radical
rule.
nr. iiftkrr aiul JtiUjgr WrCutrlieii.
If thero Is anything which we ad
mire most In a man it Is independence
of money power, or thoso holding of
ficial position. Dr. Baker, of Bartow
county, holds a ranch higher place in
our estimation than the combined
delegates from tho other counties In
Judge McCutchcn's district. In the
bold und manly stund which he has
taken in exposing through the pub
lic journals tho gross outrage con
tained In Judge McCutchcn’s lan
guage to the Grand Jury of Bartow
county, he has the almost unanimous
sympathies of tho people of that coun
ty. Wo have examined Into this mat
ter, and freely minglod with many of
tho best citizens of Bartow county,
and unhesitatingly assert that Judge
McCutchcn’s language was reprehen
sible In its extremest sense. The
Grand Jury’s only mistnko was in
not going to jail. Wo think it high
time that the rights of tho people
should bo regarded, as well us those
who are olothod in “a little brief au
thority.” There Is not, in tho judg
ment of the peoplo of Georgia, any
special divinity which doth hodgo a
Judge.
Tho province of tho independent
journalist is to tell tho unvarnished
truth. We do not believe that any
man could have hoard tho Judge’s
charge und not have felt outraged as
a freo citizen of a freo State, by its in
decorous and unjudicial tone. Under
his (Judge McCutchon’s) view the dig
nity of his position would not admit
of his taking part in any newspaper (
controversy, says tho At lanta Herald. .
It would have been far better had the
Judge urrived sooner at the conclu
sion of what “tho dignity of his posi
tion required;” in which case he
would never have soiled the judicial
ermine ns ho has done.
Don’t fail to do your duty to your
selves and to your State,-to-day, for
Alabama wants to be free.
public opinion.
Tho President’s brother lias traf
ficked openly and wherever a chance
offered upon Ids connection and in
fluence. In Chicago, in St. Louis, on
the Indian frontier, at Washington,
and in this city, he has made ills
brotherhood a matter of merchandise
without concealment.--Detroit Freo
Press.
Grant Has the Cards in His Own
Hand.—The Utica (N. Y.) Observer
says; If thero bo any such tiling as a
Republican party, in distinction from
the Third Term Grant party, It must
make itself felt immediately. , But
look around you. Who aro the pos
sible candidates of the opposition ?
Wo are at the enj of the list. Will
any man whose name wo have men
tioned hold ids own against Grant ?
When tlie President comes, backed
by the power which he wields, claim
ing that tho “unexpected contingen
cy” has risen, will Oonkliug, Blaine,
Bristow, or the others dispute ids

Election being over, the wholesale
discharge of laborers from the navy
yards is already begun. An interest
ing feature in the corning Report of
the Secretary of the Navy would lie a
detailed statement of tho number of
met) hired in the few weeks before
election day, the need of employing
them, what, they did, what was the
value of it, nnd what they were paid
for It; with a few suggestions as to
tiio wisdom of repeating tho process
in 1870. N. Y. Tribune.
Mississippi Senator. Tho Macon
Telegraph thinks tho Democratic
victory in Mississippi will result in
the election of Hon. L. Q. C. Lamar
to the United States Senate.
Let Virginia and the South, and
the whole country, take hope and
heart. Tho night has been long,
dark, and dreary. But already the
dawn is at hand; tho prayer of Stone
wall Jackson will bo heard and an
swered through quite other means
than those of bloodshed and of bat
tle; the American people of 187 G, by
God’s blessing, will so order the po
litical reconstruction of their country
ns most, assuredly to transmit “to
those that come after us, all the
freedom which we have enjoyed.”—
New York World.
It. certainly is possible that Grant
will use Cuba as a means of retaining
power, just as lie would use any oth
er means that might promise to help
him in that direction ; but Cuba is
not what he will esteem hisbest card;
and if ho should play it, it will ho as
an accessory and not as hts main re
liance. New YorkSutl.
While wo have the greatest admira
tion for Gov. TUden und other gen
tlemen of the Democratic party in
the Eastern States, we do not tliiuk
that sound policy would dictate that
the leader of tho party in tho great
contest of next year should come
from that section.—New-Albany
Ledger-Standard, ( Dem .)
Croearism is dead, and the tune the
organs are grinding is a dirge. The
Republican party Ims disavowed it.
Tho Republican conventions have
pronounced against it emphatically
and unmistakably. The President
himself has taken special occasion to
put his foot upon it. It is dead and
buried, and ean do no more harm. If
it. ever did any.—Chicago Tribune.
(Rep.)
Had wo lost every State but Missis
sippi, this single victory would have
been ample compensation for our re
verses.—Louisville Ledger.
Alabamians must have anew Con
stitution, and to-day you cun get it.
Near Rome tho simple article of
barn yard manure, is found to con
tain fertilizing properties enough to
make fort y acres produce thirty-eight
bushels of corn per acre, and forty
two acres produce thirty-six bales of
cotton.— Exchange.
