Howard, ofliartow coun ty, *’has collected a number of valita blostatistics on the subject of the cost, of raising cotton in the South. It is extremely important to know what it coats the best farmers to make cotton, nutf the letters below throw much light upon the subject. We ahull continue this discussion to-morrow. We append the letters: Lexington, fl*., Nov. 9. 1874. Dear Sir Yours of the tl<l instant in hand, and contents noted. Hav ing never experimented at all as to the cost of raising Sutton, except in a general way, I atn hot, prepared to give you an exact amount of money it would require to raise a pound of cotton. I have been a cotton planter (and I might mid a successful one for forty-six years. I do not think we can afford to raise it at 12J cents per pound, unless there is a mate rial alteration in our present system of farming. Yours, most respectfully, Z. H. Clark. Lawii ENCF.VII.Lr., Ga., Nov. 17,1874. Dear Sir :—Yours of the '2d instant, asking my opinion as to the cost of raising a'pound of cotton, did not reach me until a du.v or two ago. I hasten to comply with your request , and will give you such ideas as I en tertain with regard to the actual cost of rfrbduelng a pound of cotton with free negro labor. I will give you the method by which I arrive at the cost, which will enable you to judge of the correctness of my conclusion. Ido not believe that we can arrive at uny correct estimate of the cost of pro ducing cotton, as a general rule, ns tiiat depends upon thofavorubleness or unfaTorableiicss of the season, Ate. i To illustrate, u hand may cultivate ten acres of cotton, and do it well, and from drought or early frost tho crop bo cut off one-half, while the cost will equal the production of twice as much, the difference being enlv in the gathering. My tlgures, though, I believe will bo about an av erage in this locality. These are my opinions, given without having made any calculation or given the subject any very maturo thought previously to receiving your letter. Others might arrive at different conclusions. The items of cost are: Hire of one hand and board, $175; interest on $lOO worth of land, $7; wear and tear of land, $10; interest on horse worth $lOO, $7 cost of feeding horse, $5O ; personal superintendence, $26; total expense, $525. Credited by 5 bales of cotton, weighing 500 pounds, 2,500 pounds. If 2,500 iNiunds cost $525. one poond will cost 13 cents. Yours, truly, Thos. E. Winn. Thomasville, Ga., Nov. 7, 1874. Dear Sir: It gives me pleasure to promptly answer your question as to the cost per per pound to raise cot ton. I give you the cost for seven years, to-wit: 1806,14:50; 1867, 12:50 ; 1868, 12 : 25; 1869, 10:’.HI; 1870, 8:60; 1871, 15:61; 1872, 10 : 77. The average is 11:88. This includes interest on value of land, repairs, interest on team, taxes, fertilizers, labor of cul tivating and packing, but nothing added for personal supervision. The latter would be hard to estimate. This year’s crop has not been mar keted, but will not exceed teu cents. I keep a record of my crop annually, and it simply required the copying, as the calculation was already made ; and entered on my memorandum book. Respectfully, It. H. Hardaway. Baknesvii.le, Ga., Nov. 5, 1874. Df.ar Sir: In answer to your inqui ries I will state that I have carefully counted the cost of making cotton from 1869 to 1874, each year. 1866, the cost per pound, 8i cents; 1867, 7J ; 1868, 92 ; 1869. 12J, 1870. l:)J ; 1871, 15|; 1872, 145 ; 1873, 17J; 1874, 14 or about that, as the cotton of 1874 is not yet all gathered ; but I will not miss the figure J cent. The other accounts arc from a diary kept of expenses and profits. I mean that includes all the costa ; and all over the figures was clear profit, and all under clear loss tproducer. Ho you see that in 1873, when we got 134 cents per pound, my actual loss was 4 cents per pound, and in 1866, tny actual profit was 20 cents per pound, as I sold for 28J centB. The great difference of cost from 1867 to 1875, loj cents per pound, was caused by my inability to govern and control labor and make it effect ual, the high price of labor, and the great demand for it, with the use of high-priced guano. This has no ref erence to uny one else but my own farm. I am, very truly, Your obedient s’v’t, J H. Lavender. To all Parties Interested. £~AII lowers of Attorney granted L. R. Tobacco, Ar. \kiivoi * DiaiiLin. The Press, the Pulpit and the Lecture room are silent on the subject of this disease. A false delicacy withholds a knowledge In regard to vio lation of Physiological Laws, and life-wrecks shattered humanity, insanity, and premature graves fill the world. No race, nation or posi tion is exempt from the soul-dcßtroying scourge. Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles, trembling of the limbs, poor appetite, easily dis turbed by noise or excitement, pimples and blotches on the face, desire to avoid company, pe culiar sensation over the whole body are among the difficulties which attend this complaint. The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills will In u short time so cleanse the blood aud soothe the nerves, and restore strength to the body, as to make life enjoyable and happy. EPILEPSY Olt FITS. No other remedy will cure Epilepsy or Fits so quickly as the Cordial Balm of fctyrieum aud Tonic Pills. Kidney Diseases and many other difficulties are cured by the use 'f the Cordial Balm of Syrup and Tonic Pill:*. If the watery portions of our food are not pass ed off, they must, when retained iu the system, produce serious difficulties. Language fails when attempting to describe the suffering!) of per sons whose kidneys arc out of order ; gravel, back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the resalt if the water is not regularly and properly carried through the kidneys. The Cordial Balm of Syricum is effectual in promoting the secretion of the wa tery and unnutritious portions of the food, and in carrying it off by its proper outlets. Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable j should be passed off in the water iu sweat, and i from the bowels. If these useless matters are i retained disease is sure to follow, for then the : blood becomes poisoned with the impurities ; which should pass off iu their proper channels. The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills is a powerful cleanser of the blood; it starts the liver and kidneys into active operation, aud acta on all the secretions of the body. It carries off old and foul elements iu the blood, which are slow and sure death if allowed to remain in the system. dr UKTKJEiisnass. THE CORDIAL BALM OF SYRI CUM AND TONIC PILLS is the only remedy that has ever proved by prac tical experience a benefit to those who suffer from over-indulgence in Alcoholic Liquors, it com pletely destroys the tastes for them, and restores the victim to health and vigor. A single trial will prove it to be just what it is recommended to be. MORPHINE. THE CORDIAL RALM OF SYRI CUM AND TONIC PILLS is a sure cure for the habitual use of Mor phine, so extensively used in this country as a stimulant. It will in a very short time com pletely destroy the desire for tuis narcototic. We have many testimonials from the first fami lies in Uuropo and America, who testify to its efficacy. OPIU M. The alarming increase of the nee of this most pernicious drug as a stimulant, by male and fe male, and its peculiar effects, completely destroy ing the digestive apparatus aud shattering the nervous system, effeminating and debasing the mind, renders The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills of inestimable value, as It completely destroys all desire for this most baneful drug, and restores the nerves to a perfectly healthy state, even iu cases where opium has been ased in large quanti ties aud for a number of years. [Davenport Democrat, Davenport, lowa.] How few people are found without some indi cations of nervous disease. This truth has been recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound mind in a sound body was held as the perfection of human existence. Home from congenial dis ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous excitement—all of which can be removed and per manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor dial Balm of Syricum, which has long been in the old country the favorite remedy, and which, since its introduction into this country, has dis tanced all other medicines having the same ob ject in view.
