A Paris letter says: I must relate a
curious discovery made ou one occa
sion. M. Guyetaut took mo to see one
of his first artists, who works at
home. In the front room of a mod
est dwelling was the intelligent ar
tist working at his lutlie, and in the
back room was his wife working
ilium an Indian Shawl. A line cash
mere, wortli 4,000 francs, or, jierhupß
$l,OOO in New York, was cut into
strings or llgures, and on glancing at
it I could not help crying: “Ah! how
in the world did this 'tine shawl get
so badly damaged? Was it eaten by
the rata?” M. Guyetaut’s laughed
and saiii: “Oh, ouvriere, Monsier,
it, is not damaged at all; I am re-ttr
ranging it.” Probably my lady
readers will be as much surprised ns
I was to And tnat. these costly shawls
are purposely out in pieces and then
sowed together again. The phil
osophy of it is tiiis: Some years
tlie fashion is for white figures
running about in scrolls as in cash
meres, and sometimes for black.
Hence shawls with white ground fig
ures ate cut when black sells best,
and the black cuttings sewn in.
Sometimes, when a lot of shawls
have been for many years ou hand,
the disposition o i the llgures is
changed in order to suit the prevail
ing taste. Now, the work wasdoneso
well that I could not distinguish the
seams, but it seems to me that if I
were to buy a shawl worth a thous
and dollars, I should greatly prefer
to have it as it came from the Indian
loom. I was told that hundreds of
these re-arranged shawls are annual
ly sold to American ladles at very
large prices, and if those who have
them iind they come to pieces they
will understand the reason. They
have only to Bend the shawl to some
racommodeuse, like the person of
whom I write, and the work will be
elegantly done again. This indus
trious artist and his no less industsi
ous wife earn a handsome living
from their common labor.
The sirk Tree.
A notable tree is the sack tree, of
Western ludiu, the inner bark of
which forms very pood material for
sacking, and also for cordage. It is of
ten the height of 100 feet, with a di
ameter of six. The native method of
making sacks of this material is very
simple. Usually about one foot in
diameter is chosen, and from this a
section of the length desired for the
sack is cut. This log is steeped for
some time in water, in order to soften
the bark, and is then beaten with
clubs. In this wav the outer bark is
removed, and the Inner detached and
rendered soft ami tillable. Next, it is
folded ou itself and end, like skinning
a squirrel, and turned inside out. All
that is required to complete the sack
is, that one of the ends be sewed up,
which is readily done. But a sack
may be made without stitch or seam.
This is done bv arresting t he process
of skinning some two or three indies
above the further end of the log. and
then sawing o!T the latter at that
point. The sack has then a solid
wooden bottom. These sacks are ex
tensively used in Western India, Cey
lon, ana serve their purpose well.
The same material is sometimes em
ployed in the manufacture of cloth
ing and for paper-making. To pre
pare it for the former purpose, the
bark is stripped off in pieces, which
are then thoroughly soaked and beat
en out till the texture becomes white
and rough like fur. It is t lion cut ac
cording to the required shapes, and
stitched together.
