WASHINGTON.
APPOINTMENT.
Washington, Nov. 23.—The Presi
dent has appointed Joint L. Conley
Internal Revenue Collector for the
Fourth District of Georgia, vice Jack
Ilrown, suspended.
THE LATE VICE PRESIDENT.
The fact is now credited here that
some twenty years ago Mr. Wilson
visited a celebrated astrologer in Bos
ton and received from him his horo
scope in writing, reduced then and
there. Mr. YVilson has always pre
served it, and it records how, from
year to year, he would rise in the es
timation of his countrymen, fill his
official stations and naming them,
and that in 1872 ho would receive the
second dignity of the country, which
he did, and after that his star would
wane, and that he would never get
any higher, and that about that time
his life-work would be near its close.
This horoscope may some time be
given to the world entire, and when
it is, it will make converts to astrolo
gy.
The Mussaioit (Massuchusottßj Re
publican Association, the Labor
League, and the colored citizens of
Washington held meetings last even
ing, and adopted appropriate resolu
tions with regard to tho death of
the Vice-President.
The Sub-Committee of Arrange
ments are now in session arranging
the details of the funeral ceremo
nies.
The remains of the late Vice-Presi
dent are now lying in state at the
Capitol. They have been embalmed
ns completely as possible, though
tho post mortem prevents the process
from being entirely successful.
The body is dressed in a neat black
suit and patent leather slippers, and
tho room is beautifully decorated
with flowers sent by Gen. Babcock,
and Mr. J. B. Mann, Superintendent
and chief clerk of the Fifth Auditor’s
Office.
Mr. Mann was an intimate friend of
the late Vice President, and is the
author of a campaign life of Henry
YVilson.
MonMcomery Court Proceedings.
Montgomery, Nov. 23.—1n tho City
Court last evening, James Abbott,
colored, was convicted of embezzle
ment of funds of the Grey Eagle Fire
Company, and remanded for sen
tence.
The jury in the case of the State vs.
Charles Wesley, for the murder of
Mr. Straus, was discharged yester
day afternoon, being unable to agree
upon a verdict. It wus composed of
four white men and eight negroes,
and stood eight for acquittal and four
for conviction. The jury had been
out since last Thursday.
This morning David Alexander, a
negro, was sentenced to five years
hard labor for the county, for steal
ing a watch.
The United States Court adjourned
over until to-morrow, in respect to
the memory of the late Yice Presi
dent Wilson.
