Indeed,Counselor Toney's debut upon this occasion reflected credit on the law (Inn, with which lie is connected, and was applauded at Intervals as sober and talented. Tlie dignity and cool resolution, in which be dwelt on his gracol'ul subject, found many mi admirer in the court room anil had a telling effect upon tho jury. Judging from this splendid debut, Counselor Toney lias a very promising fu ture before him. This gentleman comes highly recommended to this city from one of the best families In tlie South, w hore he received a first-class education. Ho is at homo in his profession and we think does honor to tho eminent law firm of J). & T. McMahon, whom wo congratulate upon Ills acquisition. Mr. Editor: Yesterday was occupied in the Circuit Court of Lee county Ala., in the trial of Mrs. Sarah Brown, charged with the murder of William Bird, in Xuv 1875. Mr. Golden, the son-in-law of Mrs Brown, shotand killed William Bird near Crawford, Ala., while at the house of the former. Golden fled tho State after the homklle. Mrs. Brown was Indicted for murder, having been charged with being accessory beford the fact—made so by urging Golden to shoot Bird, as was charged in the bill of indictment. The case was taken up at 10 o'clock a. m. ou Monday Inst, and tho Jury retired at four p.W. On tlie same day they returned at seven v. M. with a verdict of not guilty. A large and attent ivo audience witness'd tho trial. Able and lucid arguments were made by Col. G. W. Hooper for tho State, Col. W. H. Barnes and Judge J. J. Aber crombie for the defendant.
