Terrific C'oiuhatM.
THE GI.XDIATOBH OF INDIA—TOT TEUUl
ble'fiqht with claws.
u . From llouHilet'K “liuliftan-l ita rritu'CM.'
Another sort of combat, much more
torrible than those already mentioned
and which is only to be seen nowa
days at Barnda, Is the Nncki-ka
kousti, that is to say, “light with
claws.” Here the combatants, al
most nnkod, but adorned with
crowns and garlands, tear each other
with claws of horn. These claws
were formerly of steel and caused
certain death to one or other of the
combatants; but they have been abol
ished as too barbarous for modern
times. Those now in use are, as I
have said, of horn, and are fixed on
the closed fist with thongs. I was
only once present at a combat of
this kind, for ray heart was so
moved by the horrible specta
cle that I refused to go again.
The wrestlers, intoxicated with bang
—liquid opium, mixed with an infu
sion of hemp—sing as they rush upon
oue another; their faces and head
are soon covered with blood, and
their frenzy knows n bounds. The
King, with wild eyes and the veins of
his nock swollen, surveys the scene
with such passionate excitement that
ho cannot remain quiet, but imitates
by gestures the movements of the
wrestlers. The arena is covered witli
blood; the defeated combatant is car
ried off, sometimes in a dying condi
tion, and the conqueror, (he skin of
his forehead hanging down in strips,
prostrates himself before the King,
who places round Ids neck a necklace
of line pearls, and covers him with
garments of great value. One epi
sode, moreover, disgusted me to such
an oxtent that, without any heed of
the effect my sudden depart ure might
have upon the Gutaowar, I at once
withdrew. One of the wrestlers,
whom tho baug had only half in
toxicated, after receiving the first
few blows, made a show of fishing to
escape; nis antagonist threw him,
and rolled on the ground before
us. The victor, seeing tlio unhappy
wretch demand quarter, turning to
the king to know whether he should
let the other rise; but, iutlamed with
the spectacle, the monarch cried out,
“Metro/rnarti!" (strike! strikeo, and
the scalp of the unfortunate fellow
was torn without mercy. Wheu lie
was taken away ho had lost all con
sciousness. That same day, the king
distributed amongst the victorious
wrestlers necklaces and money to the
ninount of four thousand pounds.

Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles,

Kidney Diseases
and many other difficulties are cured by the use
of the Cordial Balm of Syrup ami Tonic Pill:*.
If the watery portions of our food are not pass
ed off, they must, when retained in the system,
produce serious difficulties. Language fails
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel,
bock-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the
delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the
result if the water is not regularly and properly
carried through the kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum
is effectual In promoting the secretion of the wa
tery aud unuutritious portions of the food, aud
in carrying it off by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable
should be passed off in the water in sweat, and
from the bowels. If these useless matters are
retained disease is sure to follow, for then the
blood becomes poisoned with the impurities
which should pass off in their proper channels.
The Cordial Baim of Syricum and Tonic Pills
is a powerful cleanser of the blood; it starts the
liver aud kidneys into active operation, and acts
on all the secretions of the body. It carries off
old and foul elements in the blood, which are
slow ami sure death if allowed to remain in the
system.

How few people are found without some indi
cations of nervous disease. This truth has been
recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind in a sound body was held as the perfection
of human existence. Some from congenial dis
ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some
from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
bacco, suffer Irom tremor, palpitation of nervous
excitement—all of which can lie removed and per
manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor

old country the favorite remedy, and which,
since its introduction into this country, lias dis
tanced all other medicines having the same ob
