A Real rrarl A'crkiaer. Avery curious circumstance recent ly occurred here relative to u, ncolc lace, or rather a string of beads. One of the vacaut shops on the lino tie Rivoli was occupied temporarily by one of those Avan venders of pipes, perfumes, imitation jewelry, shawls, etc., wherewith the visitors to Long Branch and Newport at, home have become familiar. A gentleman resid ing in the upper part of the city stopped at his stall the other day and purchased ustringof imitation pearls for which he paid ninety cents. This necklace ho gave to his daughter for one of her dolls. A celebrated jewel ler happened to call one evening while the child was eugaged in amus ing herself with her new toy. "How foolish you are to let a child have so valuable an object to play with,” re marked the jeweller to the father. “Valuable!” responded the latter. “I gave four francs aud a half for it the other day.” The jeweller took the necklace from the little girl, aud examined it long and minutely. "I do dot care what you paid for it,” he said at length, “but this much I do kuow, the pearls are real, and the necklace is worth ten thousand francs ($2,000'. at the very lowest computa tion. If you doubt my sincerity, I will prove It by giving you eight, thousand francs for it on the si>ot.” The next morning the gentleman hastened with the necklace to the place where he had purchased it, but the shop had in the meantime been rented, aud the Arab had disap peared. How a string of real pearls had got mixed up with his beads of wax and glass, must, therefore, of course, remain a mystery. Moral- Let us buy largely and continuously of imitation jewels, in the hope that they may turn, out real. Alas, the reverse is too often aud far more fre quently the case. —Paris Letter in Philadelphia Telegraph. Dlpthrrta A physician of distinguished abili ty furnishes the editor of the Augus ta Constitutionalist the following facts concerning this much dreaded disease: 1. In its nature it is not a local af fection, as is usually supposed but constitutional, pervading the blood of the whole it makes its appearance in any purt; it is of a nature kindred to erysii>eitts, and, though epidemical, is not infectious. 2. Its moat manifest symptom is a false membrane of a white color, j that forms upon and around the ton aul, near the palate, and which thick-; ens and extends until the patient ,-1 dies from suffocation. This false | membrane Is, however, not confined to the throat, but may sometimes be seen upon the hands or arm, or any other place from which the skin lias been removed. 3. Among the cautions to be ob served are the following: Avoid all medicines and modes of treatment which shall exhaust the strength, and be careful not'to injure the skin by blisters or counter-irri tants, particularly in the neighbor hood of the throat. 4. To effect its cure, aim to restore as rapidly and effectually as possible, the patient's waning strength. For this purfiose, let the diet be of the most nutritious diameter— chicken, soup, beef, tea. &c. (live freely of eggnog, made of good whiskey, or use the stimulant in any other way that will combine nourishment with stimulation. Add to the general strength by the use of mineral tonics, of which may be administered as largely as ten drops at a dose, every twoorthree hours, foranadult. Be tween the doses of iron, give from live to fifteen grains of chlorate foot chloride) of potrsh or soda. The chloride of soda may be used as an antiseptic gargle, but the best gargle of all is common salt. If the disease give signs of periodi ty by regular remissions and asser tions, then bring in the great unti periodic, quinine. Cut this outvincl have it iu time of need, as it may be relied on. .
