St* Vri Tin*-- Ui.| l >'• An entirely new system of electric j railroad signals has just been intro- 1 dneed on the New York (Vntral and | Hudson River and the Harlem and | New Haven roads, for h distance of six miles along the tracks north of the Grand Central depot. Tne sys tem, which has been successfully operated during the past three weeks, is, without being unnecessari ly complicated In detail, no perfect that., if properly worked, it does not admit of the ixtssibilify or a collision, ( provided the engineers of trains will ■ observe a proi>er precaution and keep | a sharp lookout for signals. Because , of the many switches and crossings ! on the ten miles section of the three roads directly above the Grand CVu-1 tral depot, it is probable that cotlis- j ions would have been frequent if j large forces of flagmen had not been I employed In addition to the old tel- i egrnphie plan of signaling. At Fif ty-third street, about half a mite I above the depbt, the tracks cross so that outgoing trains starting from | the west side of the depot, where i the waiting-rooms are situated curve to the right at the crossing, while the trains coming “borne” 011 the western track diverge to the east, l’ue reason of this is the fact that by j an oversight of the arqnlFoets of the Grand Con tral depot, the |taseuger- i rixims are situated on the west 'side ] instead of the opposite, where they would bo copveuieut to the outgoing , trains whew- t he tracks are -straight. In a small welWightcii circular apart ment, : placHd a few feet from the. roof of the depot, at the northern end is stationed the official whose j duty It is to stun and admit trains. | From his position he has a view of I the interior 01 the dojiot and atom j half a mile of the track ahead. By] the aid of a keyboard and two iuUi eaters he is enabled to regulate with j perfect safety the movements of all: the trains both incoming and outgo-1 ing, and by pressing certain keys on t the board before him can 1101 ify the j porters in the passenger-rooms that j ft is time to open orshut the doors; he can tell the men in the baggage-room to,stop checking baggage' and can j sienal the engineers amt conductors 1 to board their trains and prepare | to start. He next, presee* a key marked “Hack in, ’and imme diately one of the locomotives stand ing a few blocks off, perhaps, backs j in and couples to the coaches. A i minute more elapses before a key , marked VHpU'l” is pressed. Tlic j operator is apprized <>f the approach ' of incoming trains by the ringing of an alarm which Is set in motion ty a “track” instrument placed under- i neath the rail at Sixty-fourth street, , the electric mechanism of which is j worked by the pressure of the wheels j of the locomotive as it passes over, j This alarm continues ringing uutil the train has passed at the crossing j to the eastern track entering the | depot. As soon as it docs stop the i operator knows that the crossing is clear, and lie at otwe signals the| awaiting train to start on its outward i trip, and at the same time presses a j key which change* a signal situated j some distance above the crossing to a red as a warning to approaching ' trains that the crossing is not clear, and subsequently that there is danger ahead. An incoming train, if there happens to be one coming within sight of the signal, is immeadiately ' stopped until the signal is turned to . a white by the operator, who is made aware that the outgoing train has passed the crossing by the fact that the alarm in his office has ceased to ring, North of the “X,” as the crossing tracks I at Fifty-third are called, the signals, j working automatically, operate each other. For instance, as a train pas ses along on it's journey, a slight I pressure of the wheels on the track j at a certain i>oiut so acts upon an in- j striirfient underneath, oohitnnmca-; ting by an electric current with the i simple machinery of the signal-box. that the color of t he signal is changed j from white to red, and remains so] until the train has passed overanoth- : er track instrument leaving two red | signals behind it. It is thus protect- j ed from being crowded by other; trains.coming by bind, from the fact I that as soon as the engineer of the ! later train olserves the red signal he j stops until the one proceeding it. ! after having reached a safe distance j in advance presses upon another; track instrument which turns the] hindermost of the signals to white,! and notifies the awaiting train that ! its leader is out of the danger section. A Hudsou river train bound for New York announces its near approach to i the junction by acting on a track in strument which sounds an alarm at Mott Haven station. The station master immediately touches a key which sets danger signals along the road to Harlem for a distance of a mile, and warns the up trains to stop until the signals are turned to white by the passing of the Hudson river tram over another- track instrument a short distance ahead of the junction. Trains curving from the track of the New Haven road arc accorded the right of way by a similar operation. While the electric current are in order, there is no poMMltcy of a mistake in the working of the system. When ever a danger signal is set. a bell ut the signal office is expected to ring. If it, does not, then the operator con cludes that something is wrong, and at once displays danger signals, on the Hues. The entire system is the invention of Mr. I). Rousseau, and Is entitled the “Absolute Safety Rail wav Signal.” The first experiments with it were at Yonkers, three years ago, and ft has recently beentpartial ly adopted by The Philadelphia, Wil mington, and Baltimore Railroad Company. The system also embraces an appliance to prevent accidents at drawbridges aud switches. Thus, when the drawbridge tender at Har lem tinds it necessary to open the bridge he first touches a red key in his cabin, which displays a signal of danger at One Hundred and Twenty fifth street, and notifies the station master that the bridge is to be opened. He cannot, however, open the draw until he has received in an swers signal giving him permission to do so- In closing the draw again the danger signals arc hot removed until the bridge is securely closed. Mr. Rousseau's system received the recommendation of the twelfth an nual Aessicm of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, held in this city recently. RANKIN HOUSE. Goliimliuft. Georgia, MRS. F. M.
