Frriunsl,
Wo had the pleasure of a call yesterday
from Mr. W. H. L me, tho general travel
ing agent for Dr. G. G. Green’s August
Flower.
To The Public.
On Oetolier 13th was issued a small
hand-bill over tho names of several Colum
bus houses, among them that of the un
dersigned. It contained a simple offer to
sell goods live per cent, lower than those
bought under Grange contracts. To the
Chattahoochee Association of Grangers,
speaking through resolutions published In
the Daily Times of loth Inst., over the
hand of their secretary, a gentleman of the
highest charoeter and respectability, the
card seems to have given offense.
The undersigned disclaim any Intention
of "amazing the agents,” and certainly
assume no attitudo hostiio to tho "further
enlargement of tho organization' 'of Grang
ers. The Intention is simply to sell goods
In line of our buslnoss, and to collect the.
money for those already sold. If the "gen
eral tone” of our card to “unfriendly to the
Order of Patrons," In tho sound thus pro
duced wo are simply unfortunate-out
malevolent. Of this wo may speak the
more plainly, In view of tho fact that the
senior member of this firm Isa prominent
Granger iu his community.
We are very far from any feeling inim
ical to Grangers, and doubt not their de
sire for good general results; but is not
our position sound, In urging that liefure
paying other and later demands, they
should recognize favors long since extend
ed. Wo sell goods on tho very shortest
profits consistent with the exigences of
trade, and with mercantile economy, and
to all jtersons alike; and have declined the
offers of several lodges, to furnish goods
on secret contract. Many, not Grangers,
are none the less worthy, and wo cannot
discriminate In Granger’s favor—ha ving,
as wo do, one price for the prince and the
peasant , for -the individiuil and the asso
ciation.
In times past—ln “tho hour of need”--
tho house of John McOough A Cos., liavo
rendered as much assistance as could he
made available through many agents—
rendered It to U rangers as well as others.
We now simply call upon all—Grangers
included—to keep in inlnd that the day for
settlement has arrived, and when this
hour of tribulation to upon us, wo will risk
tho venture of a just public opinion In
seeking to apply and enforce the whole
some old maxim, that “one good turn de
serves another."

Washinotoh, Dec. 9,1875.
If any man wants to see his friends, let
him come to Washington, for they are all
here now with their best clothes oil. From
Maine to Texas, and from Oregon to Flori
da, there to no State, and it utmost seems,
no (own, wlthoutite representative. There
to such a rabble of Senators, members of
Congrree, Governors, Generals, Colonels,
Judges, etc., that to Ixi plain, Mr. ap
pears a rare and honorable distinction.
The Democrats are all here: Valandlgliam
Democrat*, Jacksonian, Jiffersonian and
Oliionian Democrats have alt shaken
hands across their little chasms, and have
been eating, drinking and sleeping togeth
er. The Republicans are here too, in
great variety. There ure the disciples of
Morton, f'ontiing, Boot well, Logan and
Howe, who having not yet received intel
ligence of Lee's surrender, continue to
fight the buttle over and slay the slain
Then there are the Senatorial sutler
sffoats, fSicb as Spenorr, W’sl and Scott,
who follow far In the roar, their leaders
to plunder the camp and strip tho dead
I have eonversed with members from all
sections, ami am persuaded that the elec
tion of Mr. Kerr gives very general satis
faction. A largo majority of those who
were the firm adherents of Mr. Randall
so long as there was any hope of electing
him, do not hesitate to express there sai
tofactlon that the choice has fallen on so
good a man ns Mr. Kerr. The general
Impression with both parties, seems tola 1 ,
that, s 1 far us the influence of this election
is concerned, the Democrats will outer
tho campaign of 1876 with the happiest
auguries of success.
The opening scenes in the House were
very much tho same as those of former j
occasions. The new members were in
their scats long before the hour for open
ing. The galleries and corrido: s were
crowded as they are only ongre.it ix-ea
slons. Console! -us on the front seat of
| that division of the gallery usually re-
I served for the deplomatic corps, was Mrs.
Kerr, a large Hue looking, tastefully
dressed lady.
The old habitues of the gallery were
busy pointing out to their neighbors the
lions on tho floor. Everybody wanted to
seo Mr. Kerr, who sat quietly near the
centre of the Democratic division of the
House, and Mr. Randall, who, lixiking
ten years older than when he led tho forty
hours Ught against the force hill, occupied
hto old seat. Messrs, Cog, Blaine, Hoar,
Wood, Holman, Walker, C'lyn er, Knott
and others were also frequently under a
plunging lire of eyes and lorgnettes. It
was the remark of many Unit the tout en
semble. of the House was the iiest that had
been seen for years. The conspicuous
| absence of such Statesmen as Crutcblield,
of Tennessee; Gooch, of Massachusetts;
| the horde of carpet-baggers, and Beiiju
j min F. Butler, had gone far to make a
I good Impression, and Improve the per
smiel.
No one acquainted with the physiogno
my of former houses, can look at the
present, without being impressed with the
idea that the Nation put ita best foot for
ward In the elections a year ago.
Alter the tedious calling of the roll,
which takes Just thirty minute*, had beau
concluded, Mr. Lamar, of Mississlpp ,
nominated Mr. M. C. Kerr, of Indian 1, for
Speaker, and Mr. Wheeler, of New York,
nominated Mr. Blaine. The balloting Wa>
without incident; except, perhaps, the
little sensation of General Banks' vote for
A, S. Williams,of Michigan, a Democrfft,
and Zachariab Chandler’s bitterest enenn .
After the foregone result was declared,
Mr. Kerr was conducted to the S|ieaker’e
chair by Messrs. Ramlall and Blaine, amid
enthusiastic applause.
The new Speaker expressed his thanks
in a few well chosen words, und with voice
and manlier that showed how keenly—
almost painfully—he felt the gravo re
sponsibilities the distinction imposed. He
has not a powerful voice, but hto elocution
to good, and his deficiency in vocal power
will doubtless, to some extent, react upon
the house and impose that audience which
Mr. Blame was able to secure by dint of
lung and gavel. Claudio.
