The white citizens of Columbus have Tell hut little Interest In the appointment of a colored sexPw, cxoe|it so far as tboy had some preference for some dseerviug appii oant. THE NEOBOES, m the contrary, have felt a keen nnd live ly interest In the matter, und for weeks preceding tbe election of it while sext. !i woresimculating on the chances of their favorite being selected by tho Boxtou elm 1. Wo have a number of wortliy colored will - scrlbers, and for their tn'iieiit, aw well as ho other readers, we •*uvo endeavored to ilnd out the cause of their objection to tie •ctions ol Sexton Odom iu appointing R. P. Porter. 'Tlie n groes say that Mr. Jdom promised, if eh-ctixl, to leave the we lectiou of a sexton or the colored ceme tery to u VOTE Or THE COLORED PEOPLE, tnd that with that promise ill view Hie. worked to secure his election, as the wanted to say who should bur> their dead, and under tliut promise they would huv, 1 chance to s Meet a suitable 1111.1. VARIOUS NUMBERS ispired to the place, among whom war the present liieuiulient R. P. Porter, Ton Rhodes, Bill Wadsworth and Miltoi Threatt. They hod been canvassing tuning their race, preparatory to the elec tion which was to have taken place. THE MUNI TIP >L lection was over, and Mr. Odom was elec ted. Then mure colored aspirants euun to the surface, ami while some were lusis.- ug that Sexton Odom wh uld luiiilt lie iromlse, ifftiers equally des-rviug am ■ espected, Insisted that he should mak' in uppohitinent, as trouble would censm if left to the colored voter- to d.-ride. Mr.Odom acted on the advice of his 1 rlends, and a large number of euim'o voters and appointed, to tlie olllceof col ored sexton. B. P. PORTER, t very de erving mail. The most intelli gent jnegroes to whom we have tdkod, wjieak well of the appointment, and ex press themselves os satisfied with the ap pointment, but are irreconcilable to ill, loss of a chance to vote, though they migl t have voted fur Porter. AN INDIGNATION MEETINO was called for last night, but the proprie tor of the hall would hut allow it used uu less ho was paid in advance. The inovei • >f the iudtgnutiun left to get thefuiids, bur failed to return, so tho meeting did no take place, not even a dozen negroer tiding present at tile appointed place. THE END is that the negroes have a number oiu man for their sexton, and should mak. no further demonstration in the mattei The one last night was a failure, and thin fact alone. Is evidence tliut they acquleso m the appointment. llrrupd Chicken* At Ltpps jfc Markham's MVSUOQF.E SVI’I'KIOU COURT. NOVEMBER TERM. 1875--THIRTIETH DAY Court met pursuant to adjouiiimeiit Present His Honor, Martin J. Crawford, Judge presiding. The Court yesterday wus engaged in tin investigation of the case of Tbe State vs Peter Finnegan, charged with the murdei of Charles Wilding, The Court took a recess at dinner are: adjourned for suptier. AFTER TEA the testimony was losunwd and the argu ment of the case begun. Mr. Roland Rus sell led .IT in tlie argument, and made an excellent speech in the prosecution, lie analyzed t' e tcsthuoui iu detail, and madenn eloquent appeal in belmlf of jus tice. Ho was followed by Hon. T. W. Grimes in a speech replete with el.spiein e and logic. He spoke at length on the ir responsibility of a n.m-rompoH tnrntin. His speech was a splendid effort, and is said to lie the best lie or any young member ol tho bar ever delivered hi the court-house. The Court then took a recess until this morning at 9 o'clock. To-day Col. Thornton will speak, follow ed in conclusion by Col. W. A. Little, for tho prosecution. Good speaking will take place, and those hearing it will enjoy a treat by going to tho Court-house. A numlxT of witnesses were introduced in this ease to prove tho insanity of tlie prisoner-among them several doctors— who swore from the facte tostillod to that he was insane. The Slate introduced an equal mimls'r of physicians who tlmuglit the contrary, and that t e evidence show ed him sane at the time of the killing. This branch of the ease is the only new feature in tho ease. Heretofore nothing has been skid of Insanity, but now that plea la introduced.
