THIRTY-FIRST DAY.
THIRD DAY OP THE FINNEGAN TRIAL.
Court met pursuant to recess, Judge M.
J. Crawford, presiding.
The trial of Finnegan, charged with
murder, was resumed.
Col. B. A. Thornton concluded tlio argu
ment for the defendant Ills speech was
a masterly effort, touching upon every
point In the case. He spoks for a couplo
of hours.
Argument for tho State was concladed
by Kolloitor-General W. A. Little. His ef
fort was pronounced the crowning oho of
his official career. It was characterized
by a liberal spirit towards tho prisoner, yet
gave full justle to the State. He was lis
tened to with marked attention by tho jury
and tho spectators. Tho Chattahooche
Circuit should be proud of her Solicitor.
THE OHAHOE.
JudgoOrawford delivered an ablo charge.
It was written out that no mistake might
occur In what he said. The charge cov
ered every point, and gave satisfaction to
all concerned. It was fair, liberal and
just. He told tho Shoriff to send for him,
the attorneys on each side, and have tho
prisoner present, whonever the Jury
should make up their verdict.
THE VEDICT.
In about one hour after tho charge the
Sheriff sent for the Judge and counsel, no
tifying them the jury had made a verdict.
The Judge came Into Court and took his
seat, and asked if tho “Solicitor-General,
counsel for prisoner, and prisoner, were In
Court.” All parlies answering, the Judge
Instructed the Clerk to call the jury, and
upon their answering the call, tho Judge
ordered the Solicitor to receive the ver
dict. The foreman of the Jury, Mr. C. E.
Johnson, banded the verdict to tho Solici
tor who read as follows: “We, the jury,
ilnd the prisoner guilty of murder." The
verdict was received amid a death-Uke si
lence, and no commotion was occasioned
by tho announcement.
THE PRISONER
received tho announcement of tho verdict
with perfect Indifference. The same stolid
indifferenco that has marked hls conduct
through tho entire trial was oxhiblteo
when ho hoard the verdict. Hls father
attended him during tho entire trial.
THE NEXT MOVE,
wo learn, will boa motion for a now trial,
and falling in that, tho case goes to the
Supremo Court. The general opinion
among those not Interested In tho case is,
that tho verdict will be sustained If an ap
peal Is taken.
AN INTERVIEW WITH FINNEGAN.
Wo sent a special reporter to interview
Finnegan and find out how he felt after
tho verdict. Nothing special could be got
ten out of him, though In reply to an Inter
rogatory as to how he felt and what he
thought of the verdict, he replied, “ho felt
tlrst-rate, and that he did not think that
justieo had been done him.” In what par
ticular he declined to say.

CURES for fits.
FOR A FIT OF PASSION,
Walk out in the open air; you may speak
your mind to the winds without hurting
any one or proclaiming yourself a simple
ton.
FOB A FIT OF IDLENESS,
Count the tickling of a clock; do this for
one hour and you will lie glad to pull off
your coat the next and work like a ne
gro.
FOB A FIT OF EXTRAVAGANCE AND FOLLY,
Go to the workhouse and speak to the in
mates of a jail and you will beconvinced—
Who makes hls lied of brier and thorn,
Must be contont to lie forlorn.
FOR A FIT OF AMBITION,
Go Into a churchyard and read the grave
stones; they will tell you the end of ambi
tion. Tho grave will soon bo your bed
chamber, and earth your pillow, corrup
tion your father, and the worm your
mother and sister.
FOB A FIT OF DESPONDENCY,
Look on tho good things which God Ims
given you In this world, and to those
which he has promised to his followers in
the next. He who goes into his garden to
look for cobwebs and spiders, no doubt
will find them; while he who looks for a
flower may return into his house with one
blooming in his bosom.
FOR ALL FITS OF DOUBT, PERPLEXITY
AND FEAR,
Whether they respect the body or the
mind—whether they are a load to the
shoulders, the head, or the heart—the
following is a radical cure which maybe
relied on; for I had it from the Great Phy
sician : “Cast thy burden on tho Lord, and
ho will sustain thee.”
FOR A FIT OF REPINING,
Look about for the halt and the blind, and
visit the bed-ridden and the afflicted and
deranged, and they will make you asham
ed of complaining of your lighter afflic
tions Christian Intelligencer.
“Double Track Depot "
Yesterday evening, while passing down
Broad street, our attention was directed
to the “Double Track Depot,” the store of
W. T. Roblnsou. We were invited in, and
took a look at the large number of beauti
ful toys, the superb stock of candies, and
the quantity of Ilre-crackers and fire
works. Tho store is filled with delicacies
for Christmas presents and Christmas din
ners. Mr. Robinson has the largest as
sortment of apples, oranges, and othor
fruits that can bo found in the market.
We priced his goods and found them re
markably cheap, and at prices suitable to
the present condition of the pockets of the

A Merited Compliment.
The obliging County Treasurer was the
recipient, yesterday, of a merited compli
ment from the Grund Jury. Every Satur
day he goes to tho court-house and pays
them off, so as not to put them to the trou
ble of hunting him up. Yesterday when
he went Into tho grand jury room, and af
ter settling, Maj. Allen, in a well-timed
speech, asked a vote of thanks for Mr.
Markham, not only for his obliging man
ner to them, but for the correctness In his
office, and expressed tho belief that ho was
as correct in life os hls books were In busi
ness.
