WIT AMD HI HWR —What relation is Profanity to Crime? First cussiu. —The Pittsburg Post says: “the Knavy Department costs the tax pay ers more than any other.” —A witty Frenchman defines indi gestion as remorse of the stomach, and remorse as indigestion of the conscience. —A New York vagrant, who had been fined regularly every week for begging, requested the magistrate to fine him by the year at reduced rate. —Bystunder: "Keep the lid on, old man, or you’ll make it weak!’ Milkman: “No fear; reckoned on rain, and brought it out over proof." —“Wiiat sort of a gait do the Dem ocrats expect to travel this winter?” asks a Radical editor. “Investigate,” replies the St. Louis Times. —Tweed having been a ring-worm and afterwards a felon, has now de termined to be a run-around.— Mont. Bulletin. —A dishwashing machine is the latest invention. They will continue to invent washers, wringers, ironers, skewers and one thing and another till women will not be worth 15 cents a dozen. —“John Henry,” said his wife with stony severity, "I saw you coming out of a saloon this afternoon.” “Well, madam,” replied the obdu rate John, “you wouldn’t have me stay in there, would you?” —“My dear Murphy,” said an Irishman to a friend, “why did you betray that secret I told you?” “Is it betray that you call it? Sure, when I found I wasn’t able to keep it myself, didn’t Ido well to tell it to someone who could keep it?” “Now, John, suppose there’s a load of hay on one side of a river and a jackass on the other, how can the jackass get to the hay without get ting wet?” “I give it up.” “Well, that’s just what the other jackass did. —There is a story of a Western hunter who, after he had for four days diligently followed the trail of a grizzly, returned without the beast. Being asked why he had abandoned the chase, he explained that “the trail was gettin’ too darned fresh.” They are feeling that way in Wash ington. —A meteoric stone weighing ninety pounds fell in Missouri last week, striking a darkey square on the lucel. Ho seemed to oe considerably confused when he got up, and went off muttering: “Ef I knowod forsuahde man who frowned dat brick, den I’d see whar am de Cibil Rights ob nigghas.” —A fair young creature was heard telling her male companion on Main street, last evening, that the heart “was merely an azygous muscle of irregular pyramid shape, which re ts on the diaphram.” He said ho thought it was going to snow some during the night. —A scholastic professor, explaining to a class of young ladies the theory according to which the body is en tirely renewed every seven years, said: “Thus, Miss 8., in seven years j you will no longer be Miss B.” “I really hoi>e I shan’t,” demurely re sponded the girl, modestly casting down her eyes. —Somebody lectured in Richmond ! the other day on “All about the Dev il,” and had but thirteen hearers. In a city of thirty thousand people there are never more than thirteen who want you to tell them all about the devil. The rest are always satisfied that they will know by waiting.— Louisville Courier-Journal. —The following letterfrom a young man was lately addressed to a ,T udgo of Probate: “Sir —My father depart ed this life not long hence, leaving a wife and five scorpions. He died de tested, and his estate is likely to prove insolvent. I was left execu tioner, and being told that you were judge of reprobates, apply to you for letters of condemnation.” —Telling of a man who had lost his life in riot, a Belfast paper says: “They fired two shots at him; the first killed him, but the second was not fatal.” Ho was not blessed with two lives, as was the deaf man Taff, who “was run down by a pas senger train and killed; he was in jured in a similar way a year ago.” —Old Mrs. Duflieker of Franklin, Ky., said to a neighbor the other night, while comfortably sitting in front of the fire, that she had “alters had a great notion to learn to smoke,” she did so love the "aromy of tobueker.” Bhe added : “I would hev learned long ago, dear knows, but I heard wunst that a man had hi3 tongue paralyzed by smokin’, and that skeered me out. Lord knows I wouldn’t want my tongue paralyzed, fur I couldn’t talk none ef it was.” Asa Detroit man was digging in his garden his wife appeared at the door and shouted : “Come, you old fraud -come in to dinner!" As he did not come, she opened the door pretty soon and yelled: “Hain’t you coming to dinner, you blasted”—she saw a neighbor in the garden along with her husband, and finished—“old darling you!” —A few days ago an elegantly dress ed lady got'into a Madison avenue car, and although the day was cool, she could not wear her gloves on ac count of her many diamond rings. A balky horse having twice stopped the car, the lady wont to the door, and, looking at the team a few moments, said to the driver: “That ’ere off horse ain’t used to be druv on that ’ere side.” And that was just the trouble, in spite of the diamonds. —The other evening a traveler en deavored to walk into the Washing ton Hotel, temporarily closed for re pairs, but, was unable to effect an en trance. “That house is closed, mis ter, said a pedestrian as he passed along. The traveler banged away on the door, and tho pedestrian called out: “You, there—that house is closed!” The traveler twisted away at the knob, and once more the pe destrian called out: “I say, that house is closed!” “Don’t you sup pose I know it. you darned fool?” roared the traveler. “What I am trying to do is to open it!”—Vicks burg Herald. jj i jq Chattahoochee Sheriff Sales II TILL be sold before the Court House door in YV Cusseta, Chattahoochee county. [Davenport Democrat, Davenport, lowa.] How few people are found without some indi cations of nervous disease. This truth has been recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound mind in a sound body was held as the perfection of human existence. Some from congenial dis ease, others rrom youthful indiscretions, some from alcoholic indulgence or too free uso of to bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous excitement—all of which can be removed and per manently cured by the English Itenuedy, the Cor dial Balm of Syrieum, which bas long been iu the old country the favorite remedy, and which, since its introduction into this country, has dis tanced all other medicines having the same ob ject in viow.
