MY MHH. J. C. Mottles.
A child (the wa, ami standing neath a tall graud
old oak two.
Bbu skipt with dancing feet a rope, aud snug a
a song of glee.
Juat ou tbo ground her slate and books lay tum
bled iu a pile—
Suu bouuet. shawl and basket too, in country
•chool-glrl style;
Aud tin u a novel on the graaa, the foster-sister's
book.
That she ha l stolen here to read within this
leafy nook.
Now she picks it up to scan, tli * rope aho lets fal
down.
When upward from its opeu leaves, there floats
••The Starleaa Crown.”
She caught it aa it wavud away upon the vibrant
air,
And wondered who thiß pretty thing had dipt and
put in there.
Ita perteet rhyme, its music words, on wrapt her
childish thought
And straight she memorized each line, acd said it
off by heart,
Aud thought no more of it until like a prophecy
In after days ita words came back, bem-aiLi that
old oak tree.
She stood there with her lover fond, iu girlish
beauty now,
With love’s sweet weight upon her heart,!ts glory
on her brow,
And such their truth, aud such their love, that
augels down the air
Did seem to come in shining 'ights to bless the
lovers there.
The vow, the kIBH, the fold of love and softly
murmured plight;
The cabalistic words, the hour, when she was
clothed iu white.
Strange this old poem canto to her.aud ■•Whore’s
thy diadem;”
She answered low and softly "Lord, ’twill he iu
loving him.”
Later on beneath that tree, she stood a woman
grieved,
Aud ail the heavens were dark to her, tor she was
so bereaved;
Now ou her brow a shadow hung, that clouded
down its light,
And in her eyes were troubled tears, aud on ber
heart a blight;
Strange this old poem came to her, like lesson
line by Hue,
‘•Now where are all the radiant stars that in thy
crown should shine?”
She answered low and humbly, “Lord, does he
not wear them now,
When walking down thy streets of gold, a crown
upon his brow,
My Master, unto thee I strove his wandering soul
to lead;
Tho’ lv was here my sweet reward for every
loving deed,
Whan u, .tuii'Ug the glorious throngs did walk
with thee above,
I asked no brighter crown than this, that be had
won thy love.”
“But this bath not my hope in thee, nor promise
satisfied,
I spare thee to redeem that hope so fair ere thou
hast died.”
Still later on beneath that tree, she stood a wo
man crowned,
But with a thorny, scentless wreath her aching
brow was bound ;
Upon the hills of time she sought for treasures
rich and rare,
And with Klectra's bouuteousness, she did such
treasures share.
A thvrsus turned she in her hand, a magic, mys
tic thing,
At wunna wonderland would bloom, like Orien
tal Spring,
Aud hearts would lose their sense of pain and
brains their weight of care.
And hardest natures soften down in wonder world
so fa i r;
But she who made the vision then iu seamless
touts of light,
There was a shadow on her brow and ou her
heart a blight;
As Bonnet from the dying day takts all its colsr-
Rlow,
So from the stain of bleeding heart now did
her thyrsus blow:
And now this poem came to her, the haunting
starless crown,
And with its wrniug cracles her triumphs did
weigh down;
‘lf thou hast sought as diligent to walk in
heavenly ways.
As thou hadst sought on earth to win a godless
people's praise;
If thou badst sought more wandering souls, in
paths of peace to lead ,
Then such had been thy bright reward if such
had been thy deed;
When thou wert asked in solemn tone, ‘where is
thy diadem.’
To shining throngs thou wouldst have turned
and not uloue to him.”
She answered low ami tearful: “Lord. I know
thou wilt forbear
Reproach, when Martha-like my heart has been so
full of care,
So full of care, of sorrow here, I only asked for
rest
Behind the glistening gates of pearl, iu re
gions of the blest.
But if thoul’t spare me yet again, I will renew my
vow,
And not a starless crown shall be the crown
upon my brow.
I’ll grave upon my inmost soul this motto ail
divine:
They that turn niauy to the Lord, like unto stars
shall shine;
And by thy help, the hope sublime, that thou
hast graced me with.
Hhall be fulfilled upon the shore that holds a
truce with death.”

We knew that Childs wasn’t sling
ing around tombstones, monuments,
and elegiac poetry for nothing. A
Pennsylvania paper nominates him
for the Presidency, and although
Childs lias not responded, there can
be no doubt of his privity. There
can be no question 'either of his great
strength. Childs is a shrewd observ
er and deeply skilled in the myste
ries of human nature. A politician
who does a living man a favor very
rarely lays himself under lasting ob
ligations, and at the same time makes
a score or more of enemies. Childs
shrewdly avoids all such errors by
working only for the dead. One of
his simple stanzas on the deatli of
Araminta Jane, reveaiing to the grief
stricken parents their diptheric cher
ub dialing the golden stairs, creates
no resentments in other breasts and
anchors Araminta Jane’s family -so
to speak immovably to any ambi
tioa which may seize his poetic mind.
We feel that Childs has strength
which no other Presidential aspirant
can boast, arising, without doubt,
from his numbers. St. Louis Times.
Tlie Chattanooga Times says there
is not the least doubt but that early
in the coming yearthe first shipment
of one thousand tons of the choicest
selection of iron from our Tennessee,
Georgia and Alabama furnaces will
be made. A pig iron broker of Chat
tanooga is conducting the negotia
tions. The Times thinks tho English
market will take every surplus pound
of our cold blast metal.

How few people are found without some indi
cations of nervous disease. This truth lias been
recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind iu a sound body was bold as the perfection
of human existence. Home from congenial dis
ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some
from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous
excitement—all of which can bo removed aud per
manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor
dial Halm of Syricum, which has long been in the
old country the favorite remedy, aud which,
since its introduction into this country, has dis
tanced all other medicines having the same ob
ject in view.
Boston, July 15, 1874.
Dr. G. E. Lothbop: Dear Sir—l beg to inform
you that 1 have been troubled with Nervous
Debility for the past twelve years, and have been
unable to obtain any relief until I purchased a
package of the Cordial Halm of Syricum at Mr.
Duncan’s drug store, corner ot Loverett and
Green streets. The benefit derived from the use
of one package so far exceeded my expectations
that 1 address you this for publication, that
other suffers may avail themselves of the oppor
tunity to be cured. Yours truly,

that you let me have when you first undertook
my cure, and I am glad to be able to inform you
that, thus far, I have derived greater benefit
from it than from any other medicine I have ever
taken in my life. I sleep better, and daily go
about my work without hesitation or fear. My
nerves are getting steadier every day, and if I
continue to improve us last as I have done for the
last few months since I have been taking your
medicine, I have no doubt but that. I shall soon
again be a well man. With many thanks for the
good you have done me, 1 enclose s’2s for which
