Aii Elephant Fight at Barmin.
Writing of the Prince of Wales’* re
ception at Baroila, the correspondent
of the London Daily Telegraph says :
Tho chief feature of the entertain
ment prepared at this return call
was an elephant tight, for which
sort of exhibition the Court of Baro
da has always been famous. Native
Indian Princes have indeed a re
markable pusaion for such displays,
but Khunderago and his successor,
the late Guieowur, were particularly
devoted to the dubious amusement
of watching tho contests of animals,
so that at Baroda there has always
been kept up a large supply of ele
phants, rhiuoceroses, buffalos, ti
gers, rams and camels trained to
tight for the pleasure of the Court,
Combats still more cruel, such as the
shocking nuekhi matches, wherein
naked atheletes tore each other to
pieces with iron claws litted upon the
palm, used to disgrace tho leisure of
the Guicowars; but we may trust
that such sights are now abolished
there. The savage struggles of beasts,
starved or excited into ferocitv, are
bad enough, in all conscience, to wit
ness; but these are so very common
at Indian entertainments that, like a
bull fight in Spain, one sees them
once or twice as part of the fashion
of the country. Nor, to tell tho truth,
is there wanting an element of ex
citement in watching the tiger and
the bull manoeuvre against each oth
er, sabre-like horn against dagger
like tooth; or two well fed rams come
thundering brow against brow with
a shock that rattles far and near. Tho
Prince was introduced to certain of
these combats, and saw, besides, the
curious duel of tho rhinoceroses,
where, despite their unwieldiy
bulk and awkward weapons,
there is really almost as much
science displayed as Capt. Bur
ton has elaborated in his reeont
wonderful treatise on sword-play,
with all its deadly mysteries of mou
linet and the like. These cunning
behemoths fence and foiu to get the
advantage of the telling thrust under
the jaw with their horn, and over and
over again they will close, and press,
and butt one another backward and
forward in clouds of dust, snorting
and grunting and champing foam,
while tho attendants refresh them
with copious chatties of water, neith
er obtaining the fatal opportunity.
By-and-by one of the two combat
ants grows weary, allowing his mon
strous jowls to be thrust sideways or
upward ; and immediately with mar
vellous celerity the successful beast
drives his armed snout under the jaw
of his adversary, producing a wound
which is acknowledged with a fright
ful squeal and an inglorious retreat
on the part of the vanquished mon
ster.
For the elephant fight proper the
contending pairs are carefully
trained and prepared beforehand
with stimulating food and drugs, and
advantage is also taken of that peri
odical frenzy displayed in the male
elephant which is known as must.
At such a time of natural excitement
the elephant becomes tierce and for
midable even to his keeper, and only
to lead two such beasts forth into the
arena and show them fora moment
the waving trunk of the distant fe
male, produces a degree of pugnacity
which wants little additional encour
agement. It was one of the favorite
pleasures of the unfeeling Homan
populace to watch elephant fights In
the amphitheatre. Augustus, who
gave the people four hundred and
thirty panthers, and Pompey, who
let loose six hundred lions into the
arena, were thought to be outdone
by Trajan when he produced twenty
elephants in a state of must, and pit
ted them in deadly combat against
six hundred Oetulian captives.
That was one elephant to thirty
men, nor would the odds seem dis
proportionate to those who have
witnessed the Indian luitti, in tiis
wrath, trumpeting out blasts of rago
and defiance from his uplifted truok,
straightening his tail, dropping his
great under-hung pointed lip to give
fair play to his ivory bayonets, and
his little eyes glaring all the while
like fire-balls from tbe shadow of the
huge ears. Yet there are mahouts who
will sit on their necks and push in
the thickest of the fight brutes as
mad even as this- digging at their
nape, this side and that, with the
ankua, or hook, though hardly more
secure than would be the captains of
two iron-elads coming into collision
with their eighty-ton cannon dis
charging, if they perched themselves
upon the bowsprit ends. Hut only
the best trained animals would be
trusted thus to rospeet man amid
their wildest rage; ordinary fighting
elephants cannot be ridden to the
combat; the mahouts excite and cheer
them, and then slip off before the en
counter begins. When it does
begin such as can look with
pleasure on these things behold a
colossal duello. The enormous crea
tures like mountains rolling together,
their tusks clash and clatter, their
huge feet delve ehasms in the dust
and scatter it in clouds; and they
rear up on their hind legs and wrestle
for mastery with an agility as aston
ishing as is their senseless fury. The
trunk, ear and Hank are the weak
places, as the wise beast well knows;
and what with each keeping his own
clear and seeking to seize that of his
opponent, so that he may force him
aside and drive an ivory sword-tip
under the elbow or hock, or wring off
liis leathern ear, one and the other
probosces fly about together in the
air like arms of an infuriated wind
mill. Shrill signals of fear or rage,
of victory or defeat, accompany the
rounds, for the wrathful elephant
blows his own battle music continu
ally, and screams with tremen
dous anxiety when he is
getting the’ worst of it.
Presently some advantage is
attained, and a blow or dig which
would annihilate anything but Levia
than, is dealt, whereupon, ordinari
ly, the sagacious brute who lias
fought in vain knows that he is de
feated, and quite declines to stand up
to any needless punishment. He
turns tail and trots off, ungainlyand
diseomfitted, covered with dust and
blood, and pursued a little while by
the victor who, soon, however, is
content to trumjiet out an insulting
blast and range the arena for anoth
er foe. It wants considerable skill at
such a moment to slip the foot-ropes
on the triumphant monster and get
him out of the way; but this is man
aged by the adroit mahouts, either
by cunning approaches or by bring
ing in a couple of females. Some
times a weak elephant is forced to
tlie eartli and gored or stamped so
that he dies, but generally they “live
to fight another day,” provided that
the tusks have not been fitted with
steel points, which is occasionally
practiced.
Among curious customs and super
stitions noticed in an article in Black
wood on the “Legends and Folk-lore
of North Wales,” there is one the sin
gularity of which is heightened by
the statement that it still survives in
North and South Wales and the
Border. At a funeral, “a hireling
who lives by such services has handed
over to him a loaf of bread, a maple
bowl full of beer or milk, and a six
pence, in consideration of which he
takes upon him all the sins of the
defunct, and frees him or her from
walking after death.” The scape
goat is currently called a “Sin-eater.”

The Press, tho l’ulpit and the Lecture room
are Bilent on tho subject of this disease. A false
delicacy withholds a knowledge in regard to vio

shattered humanity, Insanity, and premature
graves till tho world. No race, nation or posi
tion is exempt from the soul-destroying scourge.
Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles,
trembling of the limbs, poor appetite, easily dis
turbed by noise or excitement, pimples and
blotches on the face, desire to avoid company, pe
culiar sensation over the whole body are among
the difficulties which attend this complaint.
The Cordial Balm of Syricam end Tonic Pills
will in a short time so cleanse the blood and
soothe the nerves, and restore strength to the
body, as to make life enjoyable and happy.
EPILEPSY OK FITS.
No other remedy will cure Epilepsy or Fits so
quickly as tho Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic

Kidney Diseases
and many other difficulties arc cured by the use
of tho Cordial Balm of Syrup aud Tonic Pills.
If the watery portions of our food are not pass
ed off, they must, when retained iu tho system,
produce serious difficulties. Language fails
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys aro out of order ; gravel,
back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the
delicate membranes of the urinary organs aro the
result if tho water is not regularly and properly
carried through tho kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum
is effectual iu promoting the secretion of tho wa
tery and unnutritious portions of the food, and
in carrying it off by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable
should be passed off in tho water in sweat, aud
from tho bowels. If theso useless mutters are
retained disease is sure to follow, for then the
blood becomes poisoned with the impurities
which should pass otfiu their proper channels.
The Cardial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills
is a powerful cleanser of the blood; it starve the
liver and kidneys into active operation, aud acts
on all the secretions of tho body. It carries off
old and foul elements in tho blood, which are
slow aud sure death if allowed to remain iu the
system.

[Davenport Democrat, Davenport, lowa.]
How few people are found without some indi
cations of nervous disease. This truth has been
recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind in a sound body was held as the perfection
of human existence. Homo from congenial dis
ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some
from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous
excitement—all of which can be removed aud per
manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor
dial Balm of Syricum, which has long been in the
old country the favorite remedy, and which,
since its introduction into this country, has dis
tanced all other medicines having the same ob
ject iu view.
