Hcraesovina—Mailern Urmreph;.
“Wlio is this Herr Zegoviua, any
way!" said a young lady the other
evening at a mixed party; “Is he the
new tenor that came out with Titions,
or is ho in the Sulvini line?”
“Why, how absurdly you do talk,
Phoebe!” replied another young
lady; “Justus if every ono didn’t
know that it was anew sort of dress.
It’s shirred and gored, and cut bias,
and folded on itself, and trimmed by
knife pleating of the material.”
Here the young lady was Inter
rupted by u corroborative young
man, who remarked she was just
talking.
“Her zegovin,” said the gentleman,
“Is French for her pull-back you
know.”
Another young man, who had had
the advantage of foreign travel, set
them all right with the loftiness of
conscious superiority.
“The Herzegovina,” he explained,
“is the national dance of the Hun
garian peasantry, like the cachuca,
or the bolero, or tho fandango, or
the Ranz des Yaches, or the bala
laika, you know. Many a time have
I seen them bounding in its airy
measures, while the heavy minarets
and mimosas waved their tops in—”
“I beg pardon,” observed another
innocent who had been abroad. “I
think you are confouudiug it with
the Hogoveriznia—a sort of polka
which I saw danced by the Hungari
ans, and also by the Dalmatians and
Dardanells. Herzegovina is a light
Albanian wine, a good deal like Rud
esheimer.”
“Ah, you are right,” admitted the
first traveler; “the similarity of
sound deceived me.”
The explanation did not, after ail,
prove satisfactory, and the young
ladi63 who thirsted after knowledge
prosecuted still further inquiries. A
truthful young man responded :
“I thought from the fuss tho papers
were making, it was anew sort of
game, like bunko.”
Finally an appeal was made to the
wealthy and experienced old gentle
man who was the host of the evening,
who, from his wide knowledge of
men and things, was supposed to be
well posted on every subject.
“Run away, children,'’ said the
good and wise old man, as lie beamed
blandly on his two fair daughters;
“run away, and don’t bother your
heads about the currency question.”
“Pay on Demand."
Entering a saloon on Lamed street
west, the other day, a man laid an
old, spavined lifty cent shiuploster on
the bar and called for beer.
“The bar-tender surveyed the old
relic, turned it over, and replied :
“Dot isn’t so goot as some brown
paper.”
“Do you go back on the Govern
ment of the United States?” demand
ed the stranger.
“Vhere is dot government?”
“Right there, sir. The Govern
ment of the great United States of
America issued that shinplaster, and
agreed to redeem it.”
“I never heard about dot,” replied
the bar-tender, pushing the money
away.
“Well, I’ll make you hear of it
mighty quick if you don’t hand out
the beer and give mo my change.”
“You mean somedings. You start
a row?”
“Yes, I mean something. I’ll have
the United States Supreme Court in
this bar-room in less than half an
hour, and before noon I’ll have you
poking your nose bet ween iron bars!”
“That I does, eh?”
“You refuse to take that money. ”
“But it ish no goot.”
“What did you issue it for?”
“I didn’t makes no money.”
“Wasn’t that money made by the
Government?” demauded the stran
ger. “Who is the Government?
Why, the people, of course. I am
part of the Government, you are an
other part, and so on. I aided to is
sue that money, and so did you, and
we promised to redeem it. Now, you
rake in that promise to pay, and give
me my change, or I’ll get up the big
gest law-suit you ever heard of.”
“Whoshall take him of me?” in
quired the bar-tender as he picked
up the money.
“Any one you offer it to, or he’ll be
liable to a suit for false pretenses.
Go right up to the post-office with it,
demand silver, and if they won’t ex
change you can get a lawyer to shut
the shop up.”
The man took it and handed out
the change and the beer, and, as the
stranger passed ou, he called to his
wife and tusked:
“Say, Katrina, what you tinks
now?*
“Some more taxes, Henry.”
“No more daxes, but I am some of
der Government, aud you are some
of der Government, and der baby in
der gradle is a leedle pit of der Gov

A man is exhibiting in Paris now
who allows himself to be tired out of
a mortar to a distance of forty-five
feet, and who then catches hold of a
trapeze. The mortar, moreover, is
actually charged with gunpowder,
which is lighted in the ordinary way,
and makes a most alarming report.
The effect of the powder is to loosen
aspring, which sends the man spin
ning through space. There seems to
have been considerable difficulty in
adjusting the strength of the spring
to the required nicety at the first ex
periment. “L’Homme Obus,”as he
calls himself, was thrown six feet too
far, and he put out a shoulder and
broke a rib. Not discouraged, he
tried again, and has now succeeded
in having himself ejected at the re
quired rate.

Tbe Press, tho Pulpit and tho Lecture room
are silent on the subject of thiß disease. A false
delicacy withholds a knowledge in regard to vio

graves fill the world. No race, nation or posi
tion is exempt from the soul-destroying scourge.
Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles,
trembling of tho limbs, poor appetite, easily dis
turbed by noise or excitemont, pimples and
blotches on the face, desire to avoid company, pe
culiar sensation over the whole body are among
the difficulties which attend this compisint.
The Cordial Balm of Syrieum and Tonic Pills
will in a short time bo cleanse the blood and
soothe the nerves, and restore strength to tho
body, as to make life enjoyable and happy.
EPILEPNY OR FITS.
No other remedy will cure Epilepsy or Bits so
quickly as the Cordial Balm of Syrieum and Tonio

Kidney Diseases
and many other difficulties are cured by the use
of the Cordial Balm of Syrup and Tonic Pills.
If the watery portions of our food are not pass
ed off, they must, when retained iu the system, ;
produce serious difficulties. Language fails
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel,
back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the
delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the
result if the water is not regularly aud properly
carried through the kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum
is effectual in promoting the secretion of the wa
tery and unnutritious portions of the food, aud
in carrying it off by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable
should be passed off in the water in sweat, and
from the bowels. If these useless matters are
retained disease 1b sure to follow, for then the
blood becomes poisoned with tho impurities
which should pass off in their proper channels.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills
la a powerful cleanser of the blood; it start* the
liver and kidneys into active operation, and acts
on all the secretions of the body. It carries off
old and foul elements in the blood, which are
slow aud sure death if allowed to remain in the
system.

the victim to health and vigor. A single trial will
prove it to be just what it is recommended to be.

THE CORDIAL BALM OF SYRI

We have many testimonials from the first fami

[Davenport Democrat, Davenport, lowa.]
How few people are found without some indi
cations of nervous disease. This truth has been
recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind in a sound body was held as the perfection
of human existence. Some from congenial dis
ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some
from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous
excitement—all of which can be removed and per
manently cured by the English Remedy, the Cor
dial Balm of Syrieuin, which has long been in the
old country the favorite remedy, and which,
since its introduction into this country, has dis
tanced all other medicines having the same ob
ject in view.

Da. G. E. Lothrop: Dear Sir—l beg to inform
you that I have been troubled with Nervous
Debility for the past twelve years, and have been
unable to obtain any relief until I purchased a
package of the Cordial Balm of Hyricum at Mr.
Duncan's drug store, corner of Leverett aud
Green streets. The benefit derived from the use
of one package so far exceeded my expectations
that I address you this for publication, that
other suffers may avail themselves of the oppor
tunity to be cured. Yours truly,
John Tuttle, Boston P. O.
Lancaster, May 14, 1878.
Db. Q, E, Lothrop: Dear Sir—l have used up
all the Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills
that you let me have when you first undertook
my cure, and I am glad to be able to inform you
that, thus far, I have derived greater benefit
from it than from any other medicine I have over
taken in my life. I sleep better, and daily go
about my work without hesitation or fear. My
nerves are getting steadier every day, and if I
continue to improve as fast as I have done for the
last few months since I have been taking your
medicine, I have no doubt but that I shall soon
again be a well man. With m'ny thanks for the
good you have done me, I enclose $25 for which
please send me as before, five more bottles of the

of them unti Ifully cured, as I believe I shall be.
