AIT£ It KKVKX CENTI’RIB*. THE TIME-BLACKENED TEMPLE OF JUG GERNAUT TUMBLING TO PIECES. India Cor roup, of Loudon Times.] An event*of some importance has recently occurred in connection with the Temple of JuKßernaut. Through out the whole of the Empire there is no shrike so sacred ns Pooree, and no spot where a devout Hindoo would rather die than beneath this great fane. The temple, which cost half a million sterling of the'money of our times, is literally black with age. The storms of nearly seven centuries —which are often so violent in the Bay of Bangui -have produced little impression upon it, aud until a few weeks ago it seemed as likely to re main as many oenturies more. Many of the large temples in the province are now in ruins, but they have not fallen through the wear and tear of time. A silent but effectual power has been the cause of this destruc tion. The seeds of the peepuland banyan trees have got into the foundations. These have taken root; the sapling has forced its way through the As sures of the stones, and in process of years the whole fabric has been loos ened and eventually brought down, and it seems probable that the Tem ple of Juggernaut will share the 3arae fate. At the late car festivals, as suon as the idols had been taken from their thrones for their annual excursion, several large stones from the inner roof fell on the platform. Had they fallen a few minutes earlier the idols would have been smashed to atoms, and in all probability there would have been a great loss of life. The resident magistrate applied to the Governor for an engineer to in spect the damages. This was found to be a very difficult task, as the tem ple is so dark. There are no aper tures for the light; five or six lights are kept burning in the daytime, and even with these nothing is visible but the idols. it is but very rarely that temples are repaired, and the sound of the chisel and the hammer on the top of this great temple will do more to weaken the faith of the Hindoo in Juggernaut than anything that has occurred in the present generation. There will be no lack of money for any estimate, as the priests are very wealthy, and the annual income of the temple is said to amount to £68,000. The question which is agitating all priests is what is to be done with the idols while the repairs are being made? The officers of the temple are most anxious to have the idols restored to their thrones. They pro pose that an inner ceiling of wood shall be made to protect the idols and the worshippers; but there would be so much danger should there be an other fall of stones that the liajah will not consent. Tile Dwarfs In Africa. There have ever been traditions of strangely formed tribes of human beings dwelling in Central Africa. That unknown region has been peo pled by fancy and fable with tailed men. hideous hybrids, half human and half bestial, dwarfs and giants. Travelers who have plunged into it have imd their stories of discovery met with cool Incredulity. It was years before Du Chaillu could con vince people that the gorilla was not a myth. When the animal’s exist ence was deHnitely 1 established, it was thought by many to account for the stories of men with tails. A truer explanation has been given by the explorations of Doctor Sohweinfu erth, the German Livingstone. This intrepid traveller spent the three years from 1868 to 1871 in the heart of Africa. One of the tribes he reached was the Bongo. All its male mem bers wear an animal’s tail fastened by a string tied round the middle of the body. This explains the fable of the tailed men as fully as a man on horseback explains the myth of the Centaurs. The most curious of Dr. Schwein fuerth’s minor discoveries was yet to come. Throughout his long journey he had heard of pigmies that lived near the equator. They were never over three feet tall, said his Nubian servants, and they woro beards that reached to their knees. They were skilled elephant hunters, creeping under the animals and killing them with stabs from below. They were in great demand as court buffoons. The explorer put little faith in these stories, thinking that seeing was bet ter than hearing. Finally he saw. At the court of a cannibal king, who ate a baby daily, be found several pigmies. They were very shy, and kept out of his way for several days. At length hia servants caught one. "I looked up, surprised at the shout ing,” says the traveler, “and there, sure enough, was the strange little creature, perched on Mohammet’s right shoulder, nervously hugging his head, and casting glances of alarm in every direction.” The wee man was soon pacified. He was chief of quite a large settlement near by. DoctorScUwcinfuerthafterward mea sured a number of these dwarfs. The tallest full-grown men were not over four feet ten inches. They said that great tribes of their fellows lived just north of the equator. They are ami able, affectionate, and quite intelli gent. Doctor Scnweinfuerth consid ered them to be closely allied to the Bushmen of South Africa. He bought one of them, Neswno, for a dog, but kept him only eighteen months. At that time he died of overeating—sure ly a very civilized way of shuffling off the mortal coll, and didnot the “first gentleman in Euroiie” to whom Sir Waiter Scott played flunky, die from the seli-same cause? Neswno’s fate is less to "be regretted, inasmuch as two of his kindred are now en route for Italy. They are to be placed in charge of the Ethnological Society at Florence. Presidential Lesson.
