THE CLOSING YEAR.
BY GEORGE I). PRENTICE.
“’Tis midnight’s holy hour—ami silence uow
Is brooding like a gentle spirit, o’er
The still and pulseless world. Hark! on. the
winds
The bell's deep notes are swelling. ’Tis the
knell
Of the departed, year.
No funeral train
Is sweeping past; yet on the streanvand wood.
With melancholy light, the mosubeaws rest.
Like a pale spotless shroud; the a'r is stirred,
As by a mourner's sigh; and on yon cloud.
That floats so still and placidly through heaven,
The spirits of the seasons seem to stand—
Young Spring, bright Bummer, Autumns solemn
torm, •
And Winter with his aged locks—and breathe
In mournful cadences, that come abroad
Like the tar-wind harp's wild and touching wail,
A melancholy dirge o’er the dead year,
Gone from the earth forever,”
* * * * * * * *
“Remorseless Time!
Tierce spirit of the glass and scythe—what
power
Oan stay him in his silent course, or melt
His iron heart to pity? On, still ou
He presses, and forever.
• *****•
Revolutions sweep
O'er earth, like troubled visions o'er the breast
Oldreaming sorrow; cities rise nrd sink.
Like bubbles on the water; fiery isles
Hpriug, blazing, from the oceau, and go back
To their mysterious caverns; mountains rear
To heaven their bald and blackened clifffe, and
bow
Their tail heads to the plain; new Empires rise,
Gathering the strength of hoary centuries.
And rush down like the Alpine avalanche.
Startling the nations, and the very stars.
Yon bright aud burning blazonry of God,
Glitter awhile in their eternal depths.
And, like the Pleiad, loveliest of their train,
Shoot from their glorious spheres aud pass away,
To darkle in the trackless void; yet Time,
Time, the tomb-builder, bolds his fierce career,
Dark, stern, all-pittileas, and pauses not
Amid the mighty wrecks that strew his path,
To sit aud muss, like other conquerors.
Upon the fearful ruin ne has wrought.”
Wanted to be an Editor.
Franklin Patriot.]
“Have you any experience in the
business?” we asked of a verdant
looking youth who applied foran ed
itorial position the other day.
“Haven’t I though?” he replied, as
ho shoved one foot under his chair
to hide the unskillful patching of a
backwoods cobbler, “I should say I’d
had some experience—havn’t I cor
responded with the Pumkinville
Screamer for six weeks? Hain’t that
experieno enough?”
"That will do very well,” we re
plied, “but when wo lake young men
ou our editorial staff we generally
put them through an examination.
How much are twelve times one?”
“Twelve! why any little boy ought
to an”—
“Hold on, please—don’t be too fast
—who discovered America?”
“Klumbus! Pshaw, them ques
tions is just as easy as” —
“Who was the first man?”
“Adam! why, Mister, I know
all”
“What was his other name?”
“His other name? why, ho didn't
have none.”
"Yes he did. You see that’s where
we’ve got you. His other name was
Ebeneezer—Ebeneezer Adam, Esq.,
late of Paradise. Nobody knows
this but editors, and see to it that you
don’t tell anybody.”
He said be wouldn’t.
“How many bones are therein the
human body?”
“Well, I forget now, but I did know
wuns.”
“What! don’t you know that? Why
there’s 7,48‘2,654,!i'21,444 bones in an
ordinary man. A man that snores
has oue more bone than other peo
ple.”
“What bone is that?”
“The trombone. It’s situated
somewhere in the nose. You won’t
forget that, will you?”
He said he wouldn’t.
“How | long would it take a mud
turtle to cross the desert of Sahara
with a small orphan boy to touch
him up behind with a red hot po
ker?”
“Well, look here, mister, if I had
a slate and pencil I could figger that
out, but dog my skin if I’m much on
mental ’rithmetio.”
“Slate and pencil! Did you ever
see a slate and pencil about a sanc
tum? Nonsense. Well, we’ll let that
question slip. Have you got a good
constitution?”
“Putty tolerable.”
“How long do you suppose you
could live on raw corn and faith and
do the work of a domesticated ele
phant?”
“Lord ! I don’t believe I could live
more’n a week.”
“Well, that’s aboutas longosyou’d
want to live if you got an editorial
position on this paper. You appear
to be pretty well posted ; wo shall ask
you one more question, and if you
prove equal to it you can take off
your coat ami sail in.”
“Let’s have ’er, ’squire. I didn’t
correspond for the PumpkinvillS
Screamer six weeks for nothin’. Let
’er come—l’m on deck, I am.”
“Well sir, if two diametrical circles
with octagonal peripheries should
collide with a centrifugal idiosyn
crasy, or, to put it plainer, we’ll say
a disenfranchised nonentity—what
effect would the catastrophe exert on
a ehrystalized cod-fish suspended by
the tail from the homogenous rafters
of the embyrean?”
As the full force of this ponderous
problem broke upon his bewildered
brain, he slowly dragged his inartis
tically-cobbled shoe from under his
chair and started from the room.
AVe heard him descend the stair, go
out, and eioso the door. We then
placidly resumed our duties, regret
ting that so promising a youth should
have been weighed in the balance
and found wanting.

NERVOUS DEBILITY.
The Press, the Pulpit and the Lecture room
are silent on the subject of this diseoso. A false
delicacy withholds a knowledge in regard to vio
lation of Physiological Laws, and life-wrecks
shattered humanity, insanity, and premature
graves fill the world. No race, nation or posi
tion is exempt from the soul-destroying soourge.
Sleepless nights, twitching of the muscles,
trembling of the limbs, poor appetite, easily dis
turbed by noise or excitement, pimples and
blotches on the face, desire to avoid company, pe
culiar sensation over the whole body are among
tho difficulties which attend this compluint.
The Cordial Balm of Syrieum and Tonic Pills
will in a short time so cleanse the blood and
soothe tho nerves, and restore strength to tho
body, as to make life enjoyable and happy.
EPILEPSY Oil FITS.
No other remedy will cure Epilepsy or Fits so
quickly aB the Cordial Balm of Syrieum and Tonic
Pijls.
Kidney Diseases
and many other difficulties are cured by the use
of the Cordial Balm of Syrup and Tonic Pills.
If the watery portions of our food are not pass
ed off, they must, when retained in the system,
produce serious difficulties. Language fails
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel,
back-ache, inflammation of the bladder and of the
delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the
result if the water is not regularly and properly
carried through the kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syrieum
is effectual in promoting the secretion of the wa
tery and unnutritious portions of the food, aud
in carrying it off by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable
should be passed off in the water in sweat, aDd
from the bowels. If these useless matters arc
retained disease is sure to foUow, for then the
blood becomes poisoned with the impurities
should pass off in their proper channels.
The Cordial Bairn of Syrieum and Tonic Pills
is a powerful cleanser of the blood; it starts tho
I liver aud kidneys into active operation, and acts
lon all tho secretions of the body. It carries off
i old aud foul elements in the blood, which are
slow aud sure death if allowed to remain in the
system.

is the only remedy that has ever proved by prac

over-indulgence in Alcoholic Liquors, it com
pletely destroys the tastes for them, and restores
the victim to health and vigor. A single trial will
prove it to be lust what it is recommended to be.
MORPITLSTE.
THE COBDIAL BALM OF SYRI
OUM AND TONIC PILLS
is a sure cure for the habitual use of Mor
phino, so extensively used in this country as a
stimulant. It will in a very short time com
pletely destroy tho desire for this narcototic.
We have many testinionials from the first fami
lies in Europe and America, who testify to its
efficacy.
OPIUM.
The alarming increase of the use of this most
pernicious drug as a stimulant, by male and fe
male, aud its peculiar effects, completely destroy
ing the digestive apparatus and shattering the
nervous system, effeminating and debasing the
mind, renders
The Cordial Balm of Syrieum and Tonic Pills
of inestimable valuo, as it completely destroys all
desire for this most baneful drug, and restores
tho nerves to a perfectly healthy state, even in
cases where opium has been used in large quanti
ties and for a number of years.
[Davenport Democrat, Davenport, lowa.]
How few people are found without some indi
cations of nervous disease. This truth has heen
recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound
mind in a sound body was held as the perfection
of human existence. Some from congenial dis
ease, others from youthful indiscretions, some
