THL LATE LEONARD SWETT. A f trill loot lawyer Who Was a Friend of Lincoln. Leonard Bwett, tho eloquent lawyer, re cently deceased, was not a very old man, and yet he had to a curtain extent outlived his fame, which wan at its maximum some twen ty-live years ago. Alexander Hamilton once said, with something like a sigh, that no fame was so evanescent os that of a great Jury lawyer, and tin nigh Mr. Bvfbtt was undoubt ed) tho most *ueoo*afui jury lawyer of this era. his fame as far as it is lasting will rest upon his early and efficient support of Abra ham Lincoln and Ids splcmdid services in deli cate management during tho war. Ho made the speech in convention putting Abraham Lincoln in nomination, and twenty-eight years later in the same city did tho same service for Judge Walter Q. Gresham. Li the anti-slavery contest ho was a groat pov/or in Illinois, his speeches from 1852 to 180ji boing very numerous and wonderfully effective. In 1868 ho was elected to tho legis lature by a majority greater than that of the liy' must be said that Leonard Bwett’ I .RON Alt h BWTCTT. , * . .. . made A i)rah am Uncoln president. He declined to take office Under tho administration, though the Peru vian mission nud other places of honor wore offered him, but ho remained in Washington through most of the w ar, was frequently con sulted and employed in delicate an<l confiden tial mission*. He wont to Missouri with dis crodoiiai y powers to remove Gen. Fremont ano mo m< yfiti ta.ei.r., *,. .o,t u work w ith rare skill and diplomacy. At the close of th* war he located in Chicago, whore ho became the sudoossful lawyer, taking com paratively little share in politics. Leonard Bwett was Inirn Aug. 11, 1825, on n farm in Oxford county, Me., worked hard in youth and gained a tolerably liberal edu* catiou by study In tlie winters. Emigrating to the west ut majority, he enlisted as a pri vate for the Mexican wtur and returned an invulid, unable to get any further than 111! lioU. This llxed his residence at Blooming ton, in that state, where he entered on the practice of law on the same circuit with Abra ham Lincoln, Stephen T. Logan, U. P. Lin der, Edward I). Baker and others who have made that circuit immortal. Judge David Davis long presided over that circuit. In 1864 he married Miss Laura R. Quigg, ami they had onechUd, Leonard Herbert Bwett, now (ilwit Jiff years old. She (lied early In 1888, and the next year he married Miss Mario Pecker, who had been his clerk in the law* office for several year*—a marriage which ex cited much Chicago comment at the time. Mr. Bwett’* experience at. the bar was re markable. Ho defended twenty-nine men accused of murder and secured the acquittal of all but one, who was sentenced to tte© pent teutiary for life, but afterwards pardoned. He then took charge of the Anarchists' cause after they had been removed to the supreme court., but was defeated. In civil cases he was scarcely less successful. His untiring in dustry in preparing his cases mid his power before a jury brought this success. In per son he was imposing—six feet tw’o inches in height and weighing, when in health, 226 to 250 pounds. Ilis wife, son, brother and three ulsters are tho only near relatives who sur vive him. Uses of Kleetricity. It doesn't Boom possible that pa would do such a thing, but Tho Belfast Age says ho did. According to that paper a Belfast man has a small electric battery which be put to a novel use. Ills wife occasionally makes him stay at home to take oareof the children, lie was left the other day, and wanted to go across the street badly, but the children worn too young to be left alone. He Anally set the battery going, thru placing the bundles In the children's hands started the current string enough so they eouldu’t let go, and lef them. They were there on his return. Tli * 'siunty of this story probably is in the electrical current of imagination that runs through it. Man is Judged by tho average in the com* tnou herd. Tho owner of a good tiling seldom appreci ates its value. Mini must work for his joys, troubles come of themselves. Kver? man Is sometimes a bait on some other man’s book. !Say a (food thing about a man. and he will try to live up to it If we could use our own good advice how happy we would be.
