SCHOOL BOARD
TO ASK FOR AID.
The Only Remedy for the
Crippled Condition of
Its Affairs.
APPEAL TO CITY AND COUNTY.
Commissioner Dunn's Report Shows That
Three Thousand Dollars
Are Needed-
The board of education, with all the
members present, at its c pecial meet
ing yesterday, declared two truths to
be self-evident.
First, that the closing of the public
schools would be a calamity and
should be avoided by all just means.
Second, that the only plan to avert
the calamity is to obtain financial aid
from the city or county, or both.
County School Commissioner H. T.
Dunn presented his report to Ihe
body immediately after the meeting
was called to order. It was a com
plete and able document, showing all
the details of the county’s educational
alfairs for the past year. From the re
poit it appeared that to operate the
schools to the end of the present term
and pay the indebtedness incurred
during the term, the sum of $3,153
would be imperatively necessary.
The members of the board discussed
the report in detail. All agreed that
the schools should not be closed, if
there was any possible means of ob
taining the money needed.
Mr. Edwin Brobston offered as the
only solution the followingresolution,
which was adopted :
Whereas the board of education
finds itself in need of funds, aud with
out some material aid from the city
or county, it will be necessary to close
the city schools at once; therefore be
it
Resolved, That a committee be ap
pointed from this board to confer with
the city and county officials, to see
what can be done toward raising
funds; and that said committee be in
structed to report to the board at the
next regular meeting.
Resolved further, That it is the de
termination of the board of education
to maintain the city schools for the
ensuing scholastic year within the in
come available for that purpose, viz.,
$8,302.95, as shown in the report of
the county school commissioner, ss
entered at this meeting.
President Isaac appointed Mr. J. L.
Beach as a committee of one to ap
pear before the city council and placed
Mr. J. L, Beach aud Mayor Mason on
the committee to appear before the
county commissioners.
Whether or not the petition of the
board will be granted is Irard to say.
Unless aid is received the closing of
the schools will doubtless result.
