mayor’s proclamation.
Whereas, the 26th day of April has
been declared by the state of Georgia
a legal holiday, to be known as “Me
morial Day,” as a fitting and grateful
tribute to her sons who died upon the
field of valor,
Now, therefore, I, Edward H. Mason,
mayor of the city of Brunswick, do
hereby direct the closing of each de
partment of the city between the hours
of 2 p. m. and 6 p. in. on the
26th instant, and most earnestly re
quest that all citizens close their
places of business and cease work dur
ing said hours, in order that such per
sons who so desire may attend the ex
ercises to be given by the Ladies’ Me
morial Association of Brunswick hl

DEVEAUX CONFIDENT.
Brunswivli’s ex-Coiloctor Says He Will Get
the Savannah Position.
J, H, Deveaux, the leading colored
republican, was in Brunswick yester
day. He has the self-satisfied air of a
man who expects something and is
certain of getting it.
Deveaux was seen by a Times re
porter. He was asked about his
obances for sitting in the high place
ot collector of Savannah. “I feel con
fident that I will get the appoint
ment,” he said, and there was iu his
manner undeniable proof that he
knew what he was talking about.
The ex-collector at Brunswick has
been quite prominent in Washington
since the McKinley mill began to
grind out appointments, and bas bad
several confidential chats with the
president. It ia a recognized fact tbat
no man in Georgia, except possibly
Mr. Buck, has a stronger “pull” at the
white house, and if lie doesn’t land in
the Savannah collectorship, quite a
number of people will be surprised,
and none more so than the colored
colonel himself.

The British steamship Henley,
which, while starting to sea Thursday,
got out ot the channel and went
aground near the jetties opposite Mc-
Cullough’s dock, came off on the night
Hood tide and was brought back and
anchored in the stream opposite the
Mallory wharf yesterday. She passed
safely down to the sound yester
day afternoon, She was not injured
by grounding, and no survey was nec
essary. The Heniey carried a cargo
