Mrs. Taylor, mother of Mrs. Loback,
left yesterday for Lufkin, Tex, on a
visit for the summer.
The extensive improvements to the
First African Baptist church are being
pushed to completion.
There will be a meeting of the Ep
worth League at 7:45 tonight at the
First Methodist church.
Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Miller, who
were married AVednesday night, re
ceived over 100 presents. •
Fred Symons', manager for N. Eman
uel & Cos. at Femandina, is spending
several days in Brunswick.
Mr. W. F. Stewart has leased the
Dart residence property in Dixville,
and will make his home there.
The First Baptist Sunday-school will
picnic at Cumberland next Wednes
day, going on the Governor Salford.
The many friends of genial Captain
Larrerui, of the Spanish steamship
Guido, regret to learn that he will sail
today.
The trotting horse owners are all
enthusiastic over the merits of their
animals, and several races are being
arranged.
Owing to the illness of Rev. W. M.
Gilmore the nightly meetings at the
First Baptist church have been dis
continued.
The german which was to have been
given at the residence of Mrs. Henry
K. Symons last night has been indeil
mtely postponed.
Misses Bertha Kellar, Ida Roths
childs and Bertha Semanskey arrived
on the Plant System train last night
from Shreveport, La.
Manager Jack Claucey was in the
city yesterday, with a smile that indi
cated the assurance of big crowds at
St. Simon this summer.
W. H. Miller, of Arkansas, repre
senting large interests in the Bruns
wick company, is visiting his agents,
Brobston, Fendig & Cos. *
Mr. A, B. Vance, the well-known
publisher of Jacksonville, who got out
Brunswick’s last directory, was in the
city on business yesterday.
Work on the Southern railway’s
new wharf from the preseut wharf at
the foot of Mauslield street to Monk
street, is expected to begin in a few
days.
Citizens, and bicyclists especially,
are complaining about the condition
of E street as far as J. Several loads
of shells would improve the drive
wonderfully.
A bicycle parade is being talked of
as one of the features of the summer
season. Savannah had one the other
day with 500 wheels in line. Bruns
wick could muster nearly as many.

While a plumber was taking out a
water pipe from Elliot’s store room
yesterday afternoon the rusty connec
tion with the water main broke and
for some time the water ran all over
Newcastle street.
The Phoenix club’s new quarters
have been cozily furnished and fitted
up, and a committee is now arranging
the roll of membership. Officers will
be elected and permanent organization
|effected in a few days.

The American schooner Mary J
Kussell, 354 tons, Captain bmith, ar
rived yesterday from Satilla, to load
from Charles S. Hirsch & Cos.
The Norwegian bark Joseph Haydn
arrived yesterday from Aigoa Bay.
She will load from the Hilton-Dodge
Lumber company for Rio Janeiro.
The American schooner Myra B.
Weaver, 490 tons, Captain Weaver, ar
rived yesterday from Cardenas,

The steamship Byron went to the
Southern wharves yesterday after
noon.
MR. BURBANK DEAD.
One of Cumberland's Old Residents Passes
Away in New Jersey.
The many friends of Mr. M. T. Bur
bank, a resident of Cumberland Island
and well known in Biunswick, will be
pained at the news of his death,
which occurred on April 5 last at Irv
iugton, N. J.
After the death of his wife, being in
feeble health, he left his island home
and went north to spend the remain
der ot his life with his daughter, Mr?.
William J. Fader, of Irvington, N. J.
His body will in time be removed to
Cumberland to rest beside that of his
wife and children.
. QUARANTINE SEASON.
The Officials Must Begin Their Five Months
Isolation Tomorrow.
The quarantine isolation period be
gins tomorrow. Dr. and Mrs. R. E.
L. Burford will move to the station to
remain from May 1 to October 1.
Keeper Vincent Pinebad, of the
station, was in the city yesterday on
his last visit until after the expiration
of the isolation period.
One of the Finest.
One of the finest yachts alloat
stopped at Dungeness the other day
on her way to New York. She was
the Columbia, owned by J. 11. Ladew,
of New York, and llies the pennant of
the New York Yacht club. The Colum
bia is 210 feet long, lias quadruple ex
pansion engines, makes 21 knots per
hour and is built of steel throughout,
costing $350,000. She will reach New
York early in May.
Action Deferred.
The Longshoremen’s Union has
postponed action on the strike until
Wednesday night’s meeting. The
union had a meeting Wednesday night
at Dart’s hall, remaining in secret
session until midnight, but nothing
delinite was decided upon. The post
ponement is probably for the purpose
of giving the stevedores more time to
consider the proposition of the uni on
Marine Band Concert.
At a meeting held last night the
Marine band decided to hold their con
cert on Tuesday, May 11. Mesdames
Crovatt, Ed F. Cook, H. H. Raymond
and Miss Annie Hino will take part.
The band has been holding practice
with closed door* for a month past,
and a surprise is in store for music
lovers in the splendid program to be
given.
To Keep the Dogs In.
An ordinance will probably be in
troduced at the next meeting of coun
cil to require owners of all dogs to
keep them oil' the streets In the sum
mer months unless the animals are
properly muzzled. The mad dog
scares of the past few days have
brought forth this intended legisla
tion .
McCranie Declines.
Mr. K. A. McCranie has declined tlie
position offered him as union ticket
agent. The Brunswick and Western
railroad has requested Mr. J. A. Mont
gomery to remain until another agent
can be secured. On this account he
will not retire on May 1, as lie had ex
pected.
Cinch Club.
The Cinch club was charmingly en
tertained at the residence of Capt. and
Mrs. W. M. Tupper last night. There
was a large attendance and the occa
sion was a perfect success.

Item Overflow.
Miss Marks, sister of Mrs. S. B.
.Nathan and Mr. M. R. Marks, of this
city, sailed yesterday from Hamburg,
Germany, on the steamship Columbia
for New York. Miss Marks will make
her home here with her sister.
The little child of Mr. and Mrs. T.
J. Shepard, of Reidsville, is ill at the
residence of Mr. C. W. Shepard, where
they are visiting. They intended re
turning to Reidsville today, but will
be detained on account of the little
one’s condition.
The steamer Egmont will go on
Briesenick’s marine railway next
week to be generally overhauled and
have her shaft straightened and anew
propeller put in. She has been run
ning with two broken propeller flange
since the collision.
The last issue of the Church in
Georgia, the state organ of the Epis
copal denomination, contains an in
teresting article giving the history of
the churches on St. Simon. The ar
ticle is unsigned, but has the literary
stamp of Rev. A. G. P. Dodge.
The Pope Catlin.
The steamer Pope Catlin will be on
the St. Simon run every day next week
to accommodate the various Sunday
school picnics. It is probable that she
will then be laid up until June 1, when
the regular summer runs will begin.
Only For Lumber.
The British steamship Byron is in
port from Fernandina to take a deck
load of lumber. The Byron already
has on board a cargo of 2,250 tons of
phosphate, taken on at Fernandina.
