nominate a candidate for sheriff, hut
in the primary, Sheriff Berrie was
generally Supported. Many members
of the club think a straight, Good
Government man should be nominated
for this important cflioe, and it is gen
erally conceded that Mr. S. A. Burney
will receive the nomination. Mr.
Burney has, until recently, resided in
the 1868th District, but for the past
several months resided in Brunswick.

Sheriff Berrie hss hi id the office for
a number of years and has always
been regarded as ore of the strongest,
men in the county.

Chattanooga, May 10.—The South
ern Industrial convention, accompa
nied'bj a large delegation of Chatta
nooga citizms, devoted the forenoon
to tjbe inspection of industries located
in this city, traveling In a special traio
of the belt line of the Alabama Great
Southern railway. The secretary of
agriculture, If on. John A. Wilson,
will address the convention tonight
on the “Agricultural Interests of the
South.” General Joseph Wheeler ad
vised the convention that he will ar
rive today and deliver an address on
“The South and its Relations to Trade
in the Philippines and the Orient.”

armory tonight and Saturday for the

Statement Creates a Sensation in Cape

London, May IC—The most impor
tant development today is the state
ment oabled from Cape Town an
nouncing that Boer delegatee advised
tbe Transvaalers to surrender if di
feated at theVaal. This remarkable
announcement ie vouched for on good
authority and evidently obtains more
credence in Cape Town than would
mere rumor. Nothin; further ie heard
from Mafeking and it is reasonable to
suppose the oooditions are unchanged.
The prolongation of the siege will only
intensify Great Britain’s anxiety to
hear of its relief. Aboujgi,loo troops
have arrived at them
