The Times baa had an interview with Col. Goodyear, who baa juat returned from New York, where he was sum moned to testify in the proceedings before tj, S. Commissioner Shields, to aeoure the removal of Greene-Gsynor to Georgia, to answer to the inaiot meot in Judge Speer's court for oon. apiracy with Capt.O. M. Carter to dt fraud the government tn contracts at Fertiandina and Savannah. Tne Times ask and Cpl. Goodyear it the report of his testimony in the pa pers was aoonrate. He said aafaras went it was, but that the important portion of hit tealinuny was left out of all reports be had seen. That in substance, his testimony was that while uudar oontract to deepen the outer her of Brunswick with dynamite in the fad of 1892, a survey lisd been mails under direction of Gey. Carter; that being desirous of Gaming what the rurvey showed as to depth, be and hi} partner, Col. Kay, arranged to cell upon Capt. Carter at hi# offlae i Si van pah, in latter ju^tion, of Kovim , her, 1693. fild csll . Oapt. Carter stated that survey would not show depths entitling to p J meat under his cootract with tbe gov ernment, and said he desired a private interv'ew with M . G todyear, which washed in Capt. Carter’s private of ftos. Csrter sated that be had always had ambition to deepen tbe outer bar of Brunswick with jetties, as recom mendid by him in hi# report of 1891, a' a ooet of $2,718,000; that he reoog nized that no such legielttion could be procured without the united support of the people of Brunswick, and that if Mr. Guodyear oontinui and his dynamite plan, the people would stand by him Carter insisted (hat jetties would get the water—Goodyear raising that question. That Greene & Gaynor were honest and responsible contract ors, and that if jstty legislation was procured, would get the contrac", re imburse Mr Goodyear in his outlays on bar, pay his expenses to Washington, where he was to aid Greene <fc G lynor and Carter to get the jetty legislation, and pay him one-third of proli a, to be not lees than one-third of $760,000. G ynor was sent for by Car er and confirmed all Carter’* proposi tions except that reimbursement to Goodyear of money be had spent on bar was to be only when jstty legisla tion wag procured. That Goodyear raised the question whether jetties would get the water, stating he must be satisfied as to tha', when John Osynor sud, “whit do you care about the water, what we are after is money.” No answer was given by Mr, Goodyear; subs-quently in December, 1892, John Gaynor and a brother came to Brunswick and in Giod years i (lice urged him to ucoept the proposition, at whiob interview Goodyear declined, and this ended the matter. That there were numerous au.veya made under the direction of Garter and other army engineers, which and and not find the depth entitling Goodyear to payment. That hia contract has been at a loss so far. That he has leg islation pending now before congress. Has been to Washington to look out BRUNSWICK, GA;, THE SDAY,MORNING, JULY 10, 1900. for his intererests eaob time legisla tion was asked. That he gave Capt, Carter his opinion of him in the mat ter of these surveys in no hocertain terms. That Carter and Gaynor’a re quirements of Goodyear wao that he should get the people of Brunswiok united for jetties, get them to use 1 heir influence to have Garter retained at Savannah and nee such effort as lay in hi#power to gpt the jstty legia iation.-at Washington . That Green 4 Guvnor weae certain to get the oon traof. ‘ The statement above' outlined, as doming from Col. Goodyear, will serve to enlighten the people of Brunswiok as tO'ths nature of bit testimony be fore the New York commissioner. As Col. G >odyaarV testimony appeared fo the associated press reports, there was a ooofliot in the minds of the av erage reader as to the true bearing It had on the Green-Gaynor case, atd for that reason The Times min sought the interview above quoted on the sub ject, ... , ; : * MAOON VOIIUNIEBSS COMING.
