His Opponents Tried to Carry the
Conventioon, But the Young

Lexington, Ky.,July 20.—Tbo dem

nominated Governor Beckham as their
candidate for governor of the Blue
Grass state. The nomination was by
acclamation.
His opponents made an effort to
carry every point, but the young dem
ocrat waa named.
It waa determined todsy by the ;op
poaition to contest every step of the
way in the convention. When the
Beckham furoes presented tbe name
of Judge Kolduns for temporary chair
man, the opposition moved to substi
tute that of Judge Peake.
While the opposition was not as
strong on the question of organizing
tbe convention as on (lie issue for the
modification of the Goebel eleotlon
law, yet the field made its first stand
on the first business in order. When
beaten the opposition insist they will
measure strength with the Beckham
men 0,0 every other order of, business
until the platform is adopted, The
platform wae disposed of before nom
inating.
At GoV. Beckham is quite a young
man it waa called the contest between
the “kids” ami “mosshaok.” at' first,
but today the latter aliiffeil and
find called it a Conti at between “Goe
belltm” and “anew departure."
They insist that Governor Beckham
is not only committed to the Goebel
election but that he also repre
sents alt that has been obargedagainst
the party during tbe eventful year.
Those advocating ‘ anew departure
and anew man” said the party would
boon the defensive with Brnkbam at
its heawhile, with anew man and
a plunk far the modification of the
Ooebel eleolion law the party would
be more united and aggressive. Many
other arguments were used by the
Held against tbe young governor, but
tbe state committeemen, state officers,
attaches of state institutions and
other organizers were for Beckham,
and they kept their men well in line
and had little trouble nominating
him.
