*cablegram received from Minister McDonald at Pekin
dated July 4. The letter was sent to the British consul at
Tien Tsin and appealed for aid. it stated that the foreign

stated that the legations lost up to that time forty-four

What President McKinley Asks of the
Chinese Government.
Washington, July 24 President McKinley s demands on China were made
public today. Following is a text of the same :
“To public positive assurance if the min
isters are alive, and if so in what condition. To put
the diplomatic representatives of the powers in imme
diate and free communication with the governments,
and to remove all danger to their lives and liberty.
1 o place the Imperial authorities of China in com
munication with the relief expedition, for the protec
tion of foreigners and the restoration of order.”

favorite and large amounts are being

Washington, July 24.—China’s pride is gone. Ap
peals lor mediation are being made to the strongest of
the powers, but not one, except probobly America, has
cabled an encouraging reply; So far the Chinese govern
ment has appealed to the United States, Germany, France
and probably Japan.
