A BOOT LAMPS.
Commissioner Stevens Gives Some
Geod Advice.
Tbs following are some rules which,
If followed, will give better lights:
Many of oar people are strongly of
tbe opioion that an oil which falls be
low tbe limits prescribed by law is a
poor oil, in the sense that it will not
give a good light. Thia opinion is
incorrect. An unsafe oil need not
necessarily be a poor illuminant, and
generally is not. Many have poor
lights beoaufe of a lack of care aod
attention to their lamps and wicke.
Tbe following paints should be
carefully heeded by those who would
get tbe best results from their lamps
and avoid accidents:
I. Use a good wick. The open
woven wick, known as tbe “ American
wick,” is excellent.
3. In adjusting anew wick fit it to
the burner, soak tbe wick in the oil,
light the wick, let (be lamp burn a
few minutes, then blow it out and
trim your wick by moving the linger
over the charred part evenly and
smoothly in one direction only. Al
ways trim the wick in this way after
each night’s use.
3. Remember that dirt will got into
oil, little particles that perhaps you
cannot see, and this dirt will gradu
ally accumulate in tbe wick, which
acts as a filter to hold back the dirt as
the oil ascends tbe wiok. After a
lime this dirt chokes up the pores or
Interstices in tbe wick and partially
’destroyes its powers of capillarity.
Then the light begins to tail, because
tbe oil cannot get to it. Ho don’t
economize on wicks. They srp much
cheaper than eyesight, l’ut in anew
one when needed.
4. Remember that occasionally,
•ay once In ton days, the dirty, dream
gy oil in the bottom of the Jsfl||
should he thrown out. It nny' ;
saved if desired by filtering it through
a piece of Hoe cotton doth. Then
rinse out the lamp with some clear

Rheumatism
Rheumatic pains are the cries of protest
and distress from tortured muscles, aching
joints and excited nerves. The blood has
been poisoned by the accumulation of
waste matter in the system, and can no
longer supply the pure "and health sustain
ing food they require. The whole system
feels the effect of this acid poison; and
not until the blood has been purified and
brought back to a healthy condition will
tbe aches and pains cease.
Mr*. James Kell, of 707 Ninth street, N. K.,
Washington, I>. C-, writes as follows; 4, A few

12. Don’t buy red oil; it never

In the oases of “poor ltghi” atd

tbe trouble must have been due to
neglect of tbe above simple precau

every well-regulated household. Re
