In yesterday’s Atlanta Journal the following article on lie subject of tbe widely discussed shirt waist will be ot interest to many in Biunswick, part y because tho shirt waist plans are beiDg much talked of here, partly because Mrs. Columbm Downing, one of the well known social lead rs of this place, who is spending some time a guest at the Ma jestic, was one of the willing signers of petitition: “The ladies, God bless ’em!” is the toast half a hundred shirt waist men ut tered in the marble corridors of the Ho tel Majestic today as they marched In a body to the dining room . The lodics of the hotel had presented a signed petition to Manager J. Lee Barnes earlier in the day asking him to allow the gentlemen guests the priri lege of appearing in shirt waists. Governor William J. Northen led the process.on of shirt waists. His waist was a snow white garment gathered at the yoke in small lucks. The black tie lie wore in the narrow collar was partly hidden by tbe well known whiskers of the ex-g ivernor, but his silver belt buck lo was wholly unobscure 1 and Hashed re splendent, rivaling the cut glass and ta ble Bilvcr in its brilliancy. Following him a large number of gen tlemen appeared, with the following de scription of their appearance: Their shirt waists ranged in color from white to purple. There were red. black and blue striped garments The belts were in all colors of the rainbow. Joined together they might have formed effective str ngs for a May pole dance. The w earers of the waists aud belts were quite as diversified in torm as were the component parts of their attire in color. There were tall men, short men, lean men, fat men, men wilh whiskers and men with shaved countenances. The combination of colors and shapes in the elegant dining room formed an attractive picture. The ladies of the hoetl were proud of their handi vork as they tntered and observed tbe neatness and comfort evinced iu tho shirt waists and the smiles of satisfaction displayed on the faces of the wearers. ' 'We just couldn't stand in the way of their comfort in this hot weather,” said one of the ladies after lunch, “We were THE BRUNSWICK TIMES-CALL, AUGUST. 25, 1900. all glad ol an opportunity to sign such a petition as that.” Mrs. B, D. Harwood and Mrs. J. Lee Barnes started the petition. They ex plained to the signers that tbe gentle men wanted to leave off Iheir coats in the bouse, but In deference to the ladies and the management they would not un less there was a unanimous sentiment in favor of the idea Not one of the ladies refused to sign. The petition of the ladles read as fol lows, and was signed by tbe prominent ladies present in the belt.:. ‘ “August 22, 11)00. “We tho undersigned, ladies of the Hotel Majestic, hereby request and urge Mr. J. Lee Karnes, proprietor and man ager, to allow the gentlemen gucats the ptivilf ge of appearing In shirt waists in the dining room and all other pa-ts of the house, thereby allowing equal rights to all snd special privileges to none.” The ordtr posted In the office by Pro prietor Barnes in response to the ladies’ request read: “August 23, 1900. “To the Male Gusts of tha Hotel Ma tic: “Gentlemen —If you so much wish, and if you think that your shape can stand Ihe pressure, each and all of you, from now’ on and ever more, are hereby allowed the privilege of appealing in the dining room or any other pa tot this hotel in yxur shirt waists “Yours very truly, - “J.
