The find was made in a trap connected with the waste pipe of the building, and consisted of the key to the room occupied by ihe president during his stay in the house previous to his first inauguration. The key bore a tag with the number 127 and the legend ‘■Mansion House.” It ra well known to many that Mr. Lincoln occupied this room for over a month and here received . .. • II ’ ' all his visitors, i • ,t. i :* - * i .-■cm The relic was picked up by one of a .' ’ t gang of negroes employed by th® con v ;j- ; ...Jf . {> 1 *-> I’ J ■ Z traciora who have torn down the histo ric place to make room for a magnificent $0,000,000 structure, and is the connect ing link between the last moments of the * .ft ’ groat American’s civil life and hi* ad vent into the White House. At tke same time he hugged the key of tho room wherein the missives were hid den and prayed inwardly that he might not be found out. The pile of letters continued to in* crease, and the good-natured Lincoln continued to become more miserable and embarrassed. HOW BE SBTU.ED IT. £ Fiaally, when he had baldly room enough to oiimb into his bed and the ma.ter kept him awake all night, he disclosed his secret to one ol the hotel clerks to whom he had becom: attached, end asked his adv.ee The cierk told him to hire a staff of secretaries and gat the stuff out of the way. Mr. Linpoln was too poor to do so, and continued to nurse his secret until the day .before the inauguration. He then decided to take extreme measures, and af set looking up the room it is now supposed he threw the key into the waste.pipe and gladly went on hi* way. He told the c-erk to keep the room for him datil he should release it. The clerk obeyed instructions and room 127 reinaiaed closed and dark. The monthly bill lor the chamber was always submitted and was always promptly paid by President Llueoln’a secretary, and th# matter probably pass ed out of hie memory. A boat two weeks after Lincola was struck down la Ford's Theatre, th* room waa opened, and for several days a great bonfire raged on tha fiats of th* Potomac River. Th* fuel was the let ters which had caused the martyr so much misery. The room haa been occupied since by many hundreds of noted persons and distinguished statesmen, but until th* hostelry waa orn down three months ago it w always known as Lincoln’s room. . . . -1 5 -i TRY ALLKN’i rOOT-EASE, A pevdsr te be shaken Into your ihoas.
