THINGS THEATRICAL.
THE DKVIL OK EARTH.
The “Sorrows of Satan,” which will
be presented next Monday night at the
Grand, depicts the doings of the devil
on earth,
-' ■ f
The Athens Banner has the following
to say of the production;
“Tho‘Sorrows of Satan’ scored a de
cided hit at the opera house last night.
*'lt is a clean and wholesome p ay and
"It is presented with splenid dramatic ef
fect. The company is a strong one,
and m audience with appreciation of
good histrionic talent can fail to be
pleased and entertained by the presen
tation of the play.
“Mr. W. 4. Brady has the reputation
of sending out good companies, and in
this instance his reputation is thorough
ly sustained. All the members of the
company shewed a thorough oomprehen
eion of their parts, and the audience
that gree'ed them, though small, was
'deligh.'tuily eutertained, giving a num
ber'Oi curtain calls.
/ "Mr. Edward R. Masrson, as l’rlnee
Lucid Rimancz, took the leading part,
representing the devil on earth, and
right well did he play his part,
“Mr. Godfrey Tempest, a millionaire,
was a strong character presented by Mr.
Seymour.
“Mr. Julian Reed, a nephew of Roland
llced, was star ctmedian of the plan and
his acting was of special merit.
“Miss Emily Dodd, as Lady Sybyl Ei
-ion, Bhowcd decided talent, and Misses
Curtis and Rea were also favorites with
the audience.’*
The advance sale has been large, and
a crowded-house will greet this splendid
nl*y .

DOCTORS FEAR CONSUMPTION.
Health Board Discusses Cm Disease as
a Great Danger.
New York.—At a meeting of the
New York board of health recently
there was an interesting discussion on
the spread of tuberculosis. In discuss
ing tbe question Commissioner Cosby
said there were over 40,000 cases of
consumption in this oity during the
past year. One of our moat prominent
and auccessful doctors who has made
a speoial study of tuberculosis and
pulmonary dia-aaes remarked when
he read the health board’s report;
“The spread of consumption, that
dreaded of all diseases, is principally
due to people deceiving themselves.
They wont admit that when started
as a sight cough has taken deep root
in the lungs, and before they know it
tbe consumption germ has pregnated
the lungs and is consuming them
slowly but surely.” He further said,
“There need be no fear of the spread
of consumption if every family kept
a bottle of Duffy’s Pure Malt
Whiskey iu the house and admin
istered it to any member of the fam
ily at tbe approach of a oold or cough
As soon as you feel the first symp
toms take a teaspoonfui in a glass of
water and continue to do so every two
hours until ail signs of tbe cough or
‘cold have disappeared.” Duffy s Pure
Malt Whiskey not only cures tbe
cough and heals tbe lungs, but it
stimulates the blood to healthy aotion.
It ib the greatest germ kilter and oura
tive ’WWWPWscience. Over seven
thousand doctors prescribe and recom
mend It for grip, consumption, bron
chitis and all diseases of ths throat
and lungs on account of its absolute
purity and excellence.
Dr. Willard H, Morse, American
director of the Bueau of Majeria
Medjoa, says:
“Duffy’s l'ure M alt is the
only reiiable and absolutely sure rem
edy for pneumonia and consumption.
Ordinary whiskey is as useless as ft ta
dangerous for the same diseases.
Duffy’e Pure Malt Whiskey increases
the elimination of carbonic dioxide
£ii(l aids nature iu throwing off the
coutumption poison. The common
fusel-oil whiskey has no such office or
privilege.”

the alum itself is reproduced to all :' hft r roße< and

gastric juice in the process of digestion. I re
gard the use of alum as highly injurious*”
Dr. Alonzo Clark: “ A substance (alum )
which can derange the stomach should not be
tolerated in baking powder.”
Prof. W. G. Tucker, New York State
Chemist: “I believe it (alum) to be decidedly j
Injurious when used as a constituent of food

Prof. S. W. Johnson, Yale College: "I
regard their (alum and soluble alumina salts)
introduction into baking powders as most dan

In view.of such testimony as this,
every care must be exercised by
the housewife to exclude the over
