THE STRIKE SITUATION:
The dispatches inform us this morning
of the probable early settlement of the
coal strike, and it is said that the work*
men have won out. The strikers had a
big advantage because of the presidential
election, and we are not surprised at
the coal trust magnates granting their
demands.

THE UNHOLY JWAR.
Mr. Charles H, Slaughter, a Macon,
Ga., youDg man, is back from the Phil
ippines. He belonged to the Twenty!
ninth regiment, and was discharged on
account of health. He is reported in
the Atlanta Journal as saying:
•‘Mr. Slaughter says some of the sur
geons show great indifference and care
leasness in dealing with the soldiers.
He says many of the American boys att
dying in the trenches with dysentery,
V
this disease having already killed a large
per centage of them.
"Mr, Slaughter says he sees no and to
the war, as it looks about the same
now as when he first went to tho is
lands.”
HUMILIATION NONE THE LESS
The Macon Telegraph, alluding to
Hobson’s recent communication as to
how the Spaniards and not Dewey di
redly sank their warships in Manila
Bay, says:
"If, however, both the alleged state
ments of Lieutenant Hobson aid the
reports of the Spanish admirals are
true, our days of boasting are over.
But Spain’s humiliation is none the
less complete. Pusillanimous is the
best word to apply to officers who
would promptly sink tholr own ships
and escape to a near shore
rather than stand the cceray's fire aud
return it til! all was lost, '

THE BRUNSWICK TIMES-CALL, SEPTEMBER 28, 1900.
POPULARITY EFCREASINC.
The decadence of the bicycle is clear
ly shown by the reports of the treasury
department. Four years ago, when all
the world was on wheels, this country
exported to the rest of the world bicy
cles and parts of them to be made up
abroad valued at *1,898,012, The next
year the value of wheels sent abroad
was $7,005,323. This was the highes
point reached during the craze. In 1898
the exports fell to $8,848,529, in 1899 to
$5,753,880. and in 1900. to $3,551,025.
The steadily.dropping figures indicate
the gradual disuse of the wheelabrcad
as well as in this country. Bat it will
not disappear altogether. The; novelty
of the wheel is simply gone, and from
a fad it has become an%riiele of use.
Instead of being ridden merely as a di
version, it will be emplcrad by those
who wish to get to btuiiUßA fo $ ..(prick
and economical way.
