VOLUME XI. GONDUCTORLATTIMORE SHOT DOWN BY ANEGRO One of tne Most Cowardly Murders in Glynn County’s History. 1 SUKER fifIOOJB BE No BlooionMs Gould Be Obtained. NEGRO WAS mm IE r And When the Conduotor Ordered Him Inside the Coach He Pulled His Pistol and Fired. Conductor Marion Laltimore of the Southern Railway was Aot by a negro Buuday erolling about It o’clock, at and died a few hours later, - Ths shooting occurred about a mile north of the (our mile crossing, but the sasrdett/r who was on the train at the time of the shooting, did not jump off until the alack up at tha Dock Junction 'track. Several stones of the shooting am being circulated and on account of excitement, and few eye wt incases, the facts leading up to the shootinu were hard to obtain. Front all accounts the negro got on Conductor Lattlmore's train at Everett and was discovered stveral miles the other side of the crot-lug. Mr. Latti more saw him and told Mm to come in side the car, but be shook his heal and would not move. The second attempt Was made to get him inside when he fired on the defenseless man. The murderer was between the engine and baggage car when be was discovered and at the lime the fatal shot was tired. Conductor Latlimore, as soon a> the report of the pistol was heard, fell back and into the arms of baggage master William Brack. His only exclamation was “Oh Lord" and he then became unconscious. Latsr he revival, opened bis eyes and gave MnßndjWls wa tch •and pocket book The engineer made a quick run t> the city, and the news created great ex< It, merit. The dying man was carried to his home , on G atrset, where be expired just lee- { fore 3 o’clock. As soon as Ur. Bur- : ford sew tbe unfortunate mao be said there was no hope for him. Tbe bul let entered the abdomen and made an awful wound. Huodreda of Bruor wlekians rushed to the depot In hopes of getting there In timi to go w ith .erlff Berrie and hie posse, but all reached there too late. The sheriff, ac companied by Deputy B. 8. Pyles, Offi- CcrScei lett and A .0. Townsend bad left a few minutes before. A rush was then made for the Mvery stables and every borne available hired, and before nine /clock a large force of well armed and "■Wmltwd n-aw-f '“ler Chief of Police "and 7 j*fit I,H! w y >the " w croftaiog whh TOE BRUNSWICK TIMES-CALH NUMBER 46. reached and the tracks ol the murderer were found, but without -dogs nothing could be done. A report then tame to the force to the effect that the county dogs hadNnea scut for and all patient ly waited for several hours. It was then learned that this rumor was untrue and the crowd returned to tbecity. The sheriff have also returned to the city, and at present ooly the country people .and officers ol adjoining counties are after the^smon. TheJ county dogs were about twenty miles from) the scene of the shooting and were not'sent for at all. A tele* g am waa tent to {Sheriff Lvnes, o' Wayne coun'y, for dogs and he arrived yesterday morning, went to the cross ing but the dogs .only followed tho mur derer’s traii a short distance. As soon as be jumped from the train the assa.-sin must have ran for the woods, went a short distance but re turned to the track and here the hounds could not follow the. trail as It was then twelve or fourteen hours old. There seems now but littlej hopes ol capture as the man bag had a long time In which to get away. With a good; bloodhound there k ♦- doubt but that thej|posse {which t Brunswick on horseback would \ e been successful in their hunt. Several names have been given the negro by those who claim to know him. Same say his name is Stewart, others assert that it is Frye, but all descriptions stem to be the same. Marion Lattimore, the dead man, was well known sod universally liked. Ilis fatber and bimself conducted tbe old Ooean hotel in this city tome years ago Later, tbe deceased ac cepted a position on the Southern railway and removed to Atlanta, but returned to Brunawick with bia family a few weeka ago. His wife was form erly Miss Dollie Clark, daughter of Capt. Clark, and siater olWr George Clark. Two little children, a boy and a girl, are made fatherless by this ter rible desperado’s deed. Shortly after 3 p, m., Sunday, this loving husband and devoted father left bis dsvoted family, and within tbrse short boors he was brought back oDly to dis. Is is, indeed, a sad story, The body of’tbe unfortunate man was embilmed, and bis mother, who resides in Washington, was sent for, a id will reach the city this morning. Pending her arrival, nh arrangements far he funeral have been made.; Delegates A. N. Kendrick and W. \V.
