THE POLITICAL FIGHT IN DOUBTFUL STATES NEW YORK IS THE HOT BED Botl Parties Cluing flu. Ernie Stale '• THE SAME *IN ILEUS Bryan Seems to Be Leading in the States oflndiann and Maryland. Cbioago, Oot. 20.—The political oat* look at this atage of the oampaign tiff Jr. indeed, vary perplexing. To anyone who ta not biased, it is hard to give an estimate of the result. You oan go to the democratic headquarters and In quire about the election, and those in obarge will tell you that Bryan is cer tain to be eieoted. Go to the republi can headquarters, and you are told, that McKinley is as sure to beljjie. winner as tbe sixth of November comas, and there you are. Tbe States which are tbe hot bed of the campaign, and which will elect the president, scam to bo New York lilinois/cndiaim,Maryland, Wt.fr Vir ginia. California, Ohio, Kentucky, Delaware, New Jersey and Colorado, Of these States, McKinley seems to have the advantage in New York, Ohio, Michigan, New Jeraey, Dela ware apd'California; while in India na, Maryland, Weat Virginia, Ken tucky and Colorado, Bryan seems to have tbe best of it. In Illinois and tbe two Dakotas, the obaafibes are about even. Although McKinley seems 10 be lead ing in New York, Croker, Governor Scons, Senator Wellington, and many others, tay that Bryan will get the electoral vote. The republicans are claiming 100,- 009 majority for McKinley outside of Greater New York, while tbe demo orata are claiming 90,000 majority in the city. Mayor MoGoira, of Byraonss, who always makes conservative estimates, says that Bryan will carry the State. He says that McKinley will not have over 73,000 majority above the Bronx. “Bryan’s trip is making votes for the party, and if Buffalo. Syraouie and Rocbestsr cast their usual heavy dem ocratic vote, 1 doubt if McKinley will get 75,000 majority outside of New York City.” In lllonois, the same state of affairs exists. Bryan has gained in Cbioago and Cook county, and McKinley in the other parts of the State* Both parties claim the electoral vote, and Illinois, like New York, is, Indeed, donbtfal.
