Oot. 10, 1900, INDIFFERENCE THAT COSTS. The people of Brunswick and Glynn county, with the exception of Dr. W. B. Burroughs, are treating the great atate fair to te held at Valdoata, with absolute indifference and we are sorry to say that none but ourselves will be the losers for this great negligence. The Times-Call made an effort to get an exhibit tbere from this county tut tailed, and now Dr. Burroughs, who endeavored to get ihe board of education to enter some representative in the oratorical contest has net the same fate. The following letter from Superin tendent Orr gives reasons for not tak king an interest in that department: Dear Doctor—At the last meeiing of the Board of Education, the 11th inst., I laid hefere that tody the question of our having an exhibit in the educa tional department at the Georgia State Fair. They agreed that it would not be advisable to attempt It, the princi pal rtaton being that our schools were so late In starting as to render it very difficult to prepare a creditable display. Then too the element or cost enters to some slight extent. We arc com pelled to economize almost to the cutt ing off of necessities. Yours very truly, G. J. Om:. Feme of the Georgia schools which are taking some Interest in the educa tional department of the fair opened the same time the schools in Glynn county did, and so this excute is too thin to hold water, The other about cutting the expense is even thinner. We know of several ways the Beard of Education and Mr. Orr could have saved enough money to have made oreditable show. ELECTION NEAR AT HAND ' The presidential election Is only a abort time oil now and the businese men throughout this large country of ours will be glad when it is oyer. This election always provee a business kill er and the present contest has been no exception. It will be admitted that America has mot been abed of sunshine and roses ■during tbo p6t six months. We have been through a business de pression that only the memorable year of 1896 equalled, and if this election was a year hence the working man •would suffer. It has teen a otSSpaign of coerclsm, bosslsm, and falaWprom ises on the part of the republicans and the democrais have also made some very peculiar statements. The man who Invests his money has been afraid, and as a consequence his purse strings have been kept tied. Those who conducted mammoth en terprises have been forced to pay e#| horbltant rates of interest or close them industries, salaries have been reduced and various other circumstance*, coming at once have stagnation of commercial | But the star of hope is ascending. w’Hh ending of the presidential election Comes the beginning of better times. If McKinley is elected, those who haye faith in his form of government will launch out and untie their purse strings, and Bryan advocates will do the same thing if they succeed in land ing their candidate. So there is no dcubt but that a re vival is at hand and we confidently ex pect the next two years to be the great est in the commercial history of the United States. ** Mr. Hanna and his “workingman’s” frtendj argument cnly holds good a few weeks before election. After that it is Czar Hanna again. Mr. Stevenson says there are good trusts and bad trusts, but that the good trusts are li&e the good Indians —they are dead . The Southern Inter state fair which is now in full blast in Atlanta Is a very creditable exhibition of the products of the south. The Daily Sun will soon make its ap pearance in Valdosta. This city Is large encugh to support a gcod daily. As mayor, Mr. Emanuel will have more thinking to do than ever, but he is equal to the occasion. All the elections will soon be over, This Is something to be thankful for. Just two weeks . from today and the great political battle will be fought. Buy from home merchants: it is a duty yon owe them. Augusta is tqifhave another morning paper. >“r HAS RESIGNED. Mr. C. PLEASED THE LITTLE ONES. Gentry’s dog and pooy show gave two performances yesterday, and it is needless to say that the avenge Bruns wick child was happy.
