The management has been put to a great deal of trouble and delay tn collecting In the past, and in future must take advantage of the Georgia law on this subject. Oot. 10, 1900, THE NATIONAL MARITIME CONGRESS The Maritime Congress, te assemble in Brunswick on the 3Ctb of January, 1901, will be one of the mbit notable conventions that has ever assembled in the South. ' The groat commercial development of the United States during the past decade has amazed the world. Our foreign commerce has assumed vast proportions. This great Increase In the volume of business justifies a feeling of patriotie pride, but evety true citizen of the na tlon te humiliated with the knowledge that only a small per centage ol the car goes for export are carried in vessels flying the American Hag. Never in tbe history of the country have the people been more interested In nny commer cial question tk*u that of American ves sels carrying American cargoes. The decline of the United States as a maritime power is the darkest page in our hietory, To restore and maintain our prestige should be the desire and aim of eveiy citizen. Tbe Maritime Congress has been called to consider tbe question in all Us phases. Distinguished representatives of all the maritime interests in the country will be in attendance. It was a graceful act upon the part of the governor to leeue the call far the Congress to be held in Brunswick and Brnnswicklaos greatly appreciate this honor. The governor and hie staff will no doubt, accept the Invitation to be present. It ia an occasion tor congratulation that Col. A. K. McClure of Philadelphia, the veteran newspapor man, orator and stateeman has consented to addrese the delegates, The Importance of the convention, from a nationat standpoint, cannot be •rereatimated. Brunswick will demon strate that the Congress was rightly called to meet within her gates. 6000 GOVERNMENT CLUB. Those gentlemen who were nominat ed at the Good Government Club meet ing Friday are pledged to a platform wbicb the Timxs-Caal think* will do a great deal for Brunswick. We must re member that the wqrld wasn’t built lira day, and we cannot expect the new city administration to do great things in a short period. A paragraph in the platform reads; “To see ibat all property bears its just proportion of taxatloa without any discrimination and to bare a (air aid proper assessment of ail property." And another says: “To reduce as rapidly as possible the floating indebtedness of the city, paying at least a part of the same each year, and to set aside annually and strictly preserve the sinking fund required to retire the bonded indebtedness of the ity,” It will be teen that our new council promises to hare a “fair and proper as sessment of all property.” We all know that the man who owns ona thousand dollars worth of property at present Is paying taxes on nearly double that amount, We know that assessments in recent years have been altogether too high, and we sinnerely hope that the new council will he equitable in this respect, Now with a reduction in assessments the revenue of the city will beeut down considerably, and in the face Of this, if tbe new council can reduce the floating indebtedness tad preserve tbe sinking fund required to retire the bond*, every taxpayr In Brunswick should be deeply grateful. * • • ** SUNDAY THOUGHTS * Rev C. J. Vaughan. My brethren, let us lay to heart these thoughts: While yet there ia time, let us try, by God’s grace, to “make our calling and eleotlon sure," Let ue leave nothing to be settled on a death bed. Let us postpone nothing, neglect nothing; take nothing for granted, which has to do with bow we are to die. This last trial, tbe test of dying, will severely try the spiritual state of every man. Depend upon it, we shall not And It easier to die e Christian death, than we And it now to lire a Christian life. if our hearts condemn ns at 4H* moment, either as to the ooodition of our ioul, or as to the condition of our life, tbe two may be separated for pur poses of self-examination. If we feel either that we are idle in seeking God, or careless in serving Him; either that we ars taking lit'le pains to bare onr conversation in Heaven, or that we are euffering inconsistent, unchris tian indulgence* to fake possession of our lives; then let us remember the saying that “God is greater then our hearts, and knoweth all thingslet us set before our minds, with serioos prejer, the thought of our own death, asking earnestly the question of tbe text, “If in the land of peace," in the quietness of daily home-life; if in dtft of health and tranquility, God's ser vice has wearied thee, so that thou oouldst cot sither live with Him de veutly, or live for Him diligently, then, bow wilt thon do in therwelUpg of Jordan? How wilt tbon sei thyself 1 to the croseingof that deep, cold, rapid j river, on the further side ef which la God, the King of Glory, dwelling among His saiute forever? To those who are walking humbly day by day with their God; to those who er*iryiog etch day to carry the cross, and go after Christ in all partio nlais of holy living and faithful obedi ence, let the thought of that dark river be one not of alarm, but of serious, Godly, Christian hope.
