B. ft evens, Commissioner oi Agriculture, i#lanta, Ga.: Dear Sir— Under separate cover I am mailing you a sample of my wheat, which up to a short time ago was look ing very woll indeed, but for the last week or two it shows au evidence of some blight. Upon examination I find some insect in the stem of the wheat be tween the top of the ground and where the first lateral ioo f s arc found. lam satisfied that this insect is damaging my wheat, and would like for you to inspect the sample and write me what it is and what can be done in the matter. Answer.—This insect has been re ferred to the Stato Enteiuologfkt, Pro fessor W. M. Scott, and he pro Ann ca it to be the Hessian fly, a wellßmwn peat, found all over the I \ States, it ia uj-.-e r --v> late to ravages of this pest upon the wheat crop. The treatment for this S sect is preventive. Thy Hessian fly isH small, dark colored insect, resembling somewhat the small mosquito. There are two destructive bjood, one appear ing ill the spring, and working at or near the lower joints of the wheat, causing the stem to break down in ail directions, a condition commonly desig nated as “straw formed grain.” The dormant stage of the insect re mains in the stubble until fall, embedded vu the outer surface of the straw at or near the outer joints, and protocted by the loaf sheaf. Tha full brood of ths adult fly Mn I'gos from the dormant or “flax setd” stage, aud th period of Us active flying or swarming varies with the latitude pud Season. The eggs are deposited op file leaves of the wheat, on wheat sown early enough to be up be fore the ending of tlie period of its active flying. The maggots hatching front the eggs descend beneath the leaf sheaves to the base ui the plant near the top of the ground, and under the ground, where they feed on the juices oi the tissue, and cause the infested plant.- to have a stunted, dark green or brown appearance, and prevent the infested shoots from producing good heads of grain next spring. The Insect passe* the winter m tho “flax soed” or “wintoi dormant stage,’' nud the adults emerge in tlie spring at periods varying with the latitude altitude nud season. Hence we " >u" 'oil :i : vise the sowing of in the S’ cri-oi of (Jalhouu until alter fir ’ n the fall. ItESTIOX THIS PAPER WHEN WIUtIM. the talito get rid of the fly, and soon enough for the wheat to get a good start to prevent winter freezing, hence you will see that just when to sow your wheat is a very important matter to be determined, aud the latitude, altitude and the season play au Important part. But after all the experience and good judgment of the planter must dictate just when to sow his grain. REMEDY SUOOKSTED. The remedy for the Hossian fly is; 1. Rotation of crops, planting the lame land every three years after a clean crop, as ootton. 2. After the grain has beou gathered in the spring, in tho/all all the stubbie and refuse of the field should bo rakod together and efleotaally burned. 8. Some recommend late sowing as a remedy to avoid the evil, since, if de ferred until after the fly has laid it! eggs the wheat esoapes the first brood. This, however is objectionable in re spect to the crop not being thus able to obtain a good start before the frost comes, and consequently, being liable to ( winter killing. 4. Pasturing the crop with sheep foi a day or two, or mowing off the tope of the plants and feeding to stook iu order to destroy the eggs, together with tho use of the roller, are means often em ployed. We consider, thongh, burning the stubble the most effectual remedy, aaido from that of giving best chance tc the crop to obtain a vigorous growth bS i fru-H thesepcstsmake their appearance, k 5. AiuiUlW fomedy recommended is as follows: Sow a narrow strip of wheat aronnd each field in August or early in September, aud defer as long as the season will permit the sowing of the wheat from which the c-rqp is to be obtained. By this moans the wheat •own in the strip will make its appear ance moat of the eg(fi of the fly upon it. After this period ItUfcould be plowed under very decpl.vlntt the eggs may bo de stroyed, and the latter wheat then sown. The outer strip may then be included also. This method is said to bo very successful. It will destroy tho fly and protect the wheat at the same time.
