Lawton announced at tbe meeting of the officers of the First Infantry at tbe Regimental Armory last nigbt tbat he bad written tbe ad jutant-general of tbe Georgia State Troops requesting to be plsced upon the list of retired offioers in tbe Btate service. Tbe announcement fell like a thunderbolt from a olear eky among tbe offioere, as none of them knew of them knew of Col. Lawton's intention. “All of them received tbe annennce ment with tbe utmest regret, and farmed a rebellions determination to do all in tbair power to prevent tbeir colonel from oarrying oat bie purpoee. The enlisted mm of tbe regiment will stand at tbe back of tbeir offioere in tbe effort to indnoe Col.
