Thiß Is the verdict returned ha' ‘ twelve men who were selectedWb try the case ol Triey Griffin, the murderer of Conductor Marlon Latimer. The prisoner was defended by twa able attornye, he went to trial with every reasonable doubt on his side. Both Judge Boling Whitfield and Colonel E. E, Dart made excellent arguments before the jury; they fought every loch of ground but facts and evi dence were stronger than ability, The state’s web was around Griffin after tha examination of a half dozen witnesses and it could not be broken. He has had a fair and impartial trial, found guilty and ha will now Uuve to pay the penalty ot death. All of yesterday was consumed In the trial of this case and the farther it got, the works it looked for tbe murderer. His own witnesses and bis own color, told the truth ntjd he stands on the threshold o' the sr-tlJow'. But the nerve ol this negro is noth-, mg short of wonderful. A minute be fore the verdict wa read he sat With his arms folded, a smile oi his-fr.co.and eyen after tbe solutnu wordo of the ju-y were read he laughed and joked with a. person near him. After the yerdict had been read Judge Becnel announced that be would aen tence the prisoner today, The straight verdict of murder will of courso mean hanging. This will roaka the seventh man Judge Bennett has eea tenced to die einoe he was olectud judge something over two years ago, and strange to say, not one of thin cumber haa carried a case to the Supreme court in fact ail have paid the dra'h penalty.
