The following were read and adopted: Brunswick, Qa., Jan. 3,1901. llessrs. Mayor and Counoil of the City of Brunswiok— Gentlemen: Your special committee to which was referred the code of laws and ordioanoes, as have been codified by Owene Johnson, attorney-al-law, under ooncract with the city, beg leave to make the following report on same. We file with the Clerk of Council the said code of laws and ordinances of force in the city, and we would recom mend the passage of an ordinance adopting the oode as thus prepared and submitted to your committee. The work as done by Mr. Johnson has been performed in a lawysr-like and painstaking manner. We regard the work as well done, and we recom mend I hat the oode of laws for the city as thue prepared and submitted to your oommittee, be aocepted aod adopted 1900 FIRE LOSS IN TIE ONITED STATES IS VERY HEAVY New York, Jau. 4, —The Journal of Commerce prints the following: “Fire underwriters suffered terribly during 1889. The aggregate Are loss Of the United S'ates and Canada du ring the year just closed, as compiled from carefully kept records, was $193, 382,250. Turner, asking that be be relieved fom payment of license tax for 1900, beg to make the following report on tbe same; Your committee finds that Mr. Tur ner *n not an ex-Confederate soldier, and that he cannot legally be relieved from payment of the regular license tax. Mayor and Council of the City of Brunswick— " Gentlemen-—Your Standing Com inirtee, to which was referred the peti tion of Mrs. Minnie Gann, with refer ence to tbe redemption by her of a certain tract of land from tbe city, known as the u Moore tract,” upon payment of certain sums of money, as in said petition specified, beg to make the following report on same : While your committee cannot agree with the petitioner that the city’s title to tbe property in question is not good, yet, it has been the polioy of tbe present city administration to allow citizen* to get back their property which bad been, through oversight on the part of such citizens, sold for taxes, upon payment, of proper chargee of tiXcS to tbe city. Major and Council of the City of Brunswick— Gentlemen Your Standing Com mittee on Taxes and Revenues, to which was referred the petition of Mr9. Bertha .Nathan, alleged payment of taxes upon alleged improvements on the N. W. one-sixth of Towns Commons lot. No. 37, between Wolf and Albany streets; and requesting the city to refund to her the sums paid by her for suoh alleged improvements on said portion of said lot, on the plea that no improvements havp, in fact, ever existed on said portion of said lot, beg to make tbe following report on same: Tbe averments in petition are true. Tbe mistake, evidently, was made by the tax assetsors, and inasmuch a9 there are no improvements on said portion of said lot, nor have there been, you committee would recommend that tbe clerk make out a voucher in favor of Mrs. Nathan for the amount paid by her to the oity for taxes on such al leged improvements on paid portion of said lot; as the city never had any right to tax for improvements od property which did not In fact exist. Minehan, praying payment to her by tbe oity of tbe sum of $5.00 for taxes exacted improperly of her upon improvements npon property as in her petition stated, whioh improve ments had no existence as a matter of faot, beg to make the following report upon same: The tax assessors evidently, through oversight, assessed improvement on the lot in question. No improvements existed in faot on the lot in question, from investigation of your committee as well as tb it of the city eurveryor; the oity had no right to charge peti tioner tixes for such improvements, and we recommend that the sum of $5 00 be paid by the city to the peti tioner, Kespeotfully submitted, D. The board of trade held an interest ing meeting yesterday the object of the same being to receive reports and dis cuss plans for tbe Maritime Congress. Many letters from prominent men in ail parts of the country wero read and from these there is no doubt but that a larger number of delegates will attend than was at first expected. The board of trade request the p°rple to decorate their places of business with flags, bunting, etc. Everything for the congress is now in good shape. GLOB TO FIGHT FOE DEMOCBACY New York, Jan, 4 —Grover Cleve land, David B. Hiil, Daniel S. Lamont, William F, Sbeeban, William C. Whitney, Jacob A. Canter, and other democrats, are, it is announced, to be come members of the Samuel J. Tilden oJub, with headquarters at Broadway and Seventy second streets, articles of incorporation for wbiob have just been signed by Justice Leventritt in the Supreme court. The club, as deolared by those who are promoting its interests, is to be the pioneer in the movement suggested by Grover Cleveland for the reorgani zation of democracy, and to promul gate democratic principled throughout the United States. It is to be a nation al as well as a state and local institu tion, and will seek to have nominated for office only ‘slmon pure’ democrats, running on ‘old fashioned’ democratic platforms. Senator Quay Has Secured the Vote He Needed in Pennsylvania. Waynesboro, Pa., Jan. 4.—Benjamin F. Wiley, ona of the Republican rep resentatives of Franklin county, Pennsylvania, admits that he will cast his vote for Mr. Quay for United States senator Jan. 15. The Quay leaders claim that the accession of Welty gives them the 127 votes neces sary to elect. BOOM IN ALABAMA. New Maobine Works Will be Started by Touncssee Capitalists. Tbe convention will be known aa ‘Rhe Brunswick and BirminghMi Railroad Convention” and President Frank D. Aiken of the Brunswick Beard of Trad* on yeefe-day made formal announcement of it. He hat also appointed some of the eommittaea who will at onoe go actively to work to arrgng* to get delegates from among those interested in tbe route of ire Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad and will announce all the 1 other ec mittees in a few days.
