FIRST WITNESS CALLED IS ADMIRAL
HIGGINSON AND HIS TESTIMONY
PROVES ENTIRELY FAVORABLE TO
THE HERO OF SANTIAGO.
Washington, Sept. 30.—The Schley
oourt of inquiry today began the ex
amination of witnesses, Admiral Hig
ginson, oommander in ohief of the
north Atlantio squadron, being the first
-one oalled. Promptly at 11 o’clook Ad
miral Dewey oailed the conrt to order.
Rear Admiral Ramsay occupied the
seat vacated by Rear Admiral H mi
eon. When Admiral Soblejr, accom
panied by hie oounsel, entered the room
there was a c'apping of hand, among
the spectators. The admiral stopped
the applause, however, by the ways of
his hand. Immediately npon the assem
bling of the court Judge Advooate
Lenley asked Admiral Sobley if he had
any objection to urge to any member
of the court, The latter promptly re
plied that he had notand the oourt re
tired for a short consultation, and then
the aotual business for which it had
been celled was taken up. Admiral
Higginson was the first witness and
hie testimony was favorable to Sobley.

BOILER MAKER CUT.
An Unknown Negro Does Some Carving on
Mr. Graham.
Mr. Graham, a boiler maker em
ployed at Bnesneck’a foundry, is oou
fined to bis room by various and sun
dry knife wounds inflicted upon his
person Thursday night.
The oarver of Mr. Graham’s anatomy
is an unknown negro and hie reasons
for doing the job is alleged to be noth,
iog.
Aooording to Mr. Graham be was in
disposed Thursday night and sought
she ter in a negro woman’s house. He
was awaksned about midnight by a
doable action knife stroke propelled by
the arm of an able bodied nogro, slicing

ders. He fought desperately and then
when almost exhausted yelled for the
police and a doctor. Both cams. Pa
trolman Brady first and Dr. Hatcher
afterwards. They did all they could
for the wounded man and at last ac
counts be was resting easily.
As usual the woman claims she
“don’t know nothing about wbo did the
cutting,” and says the man just walked
in and started to work on the carving
of Graham. She says Mr. Graham came
to her home for shelter during the
rain and she gave him her bed.
A bloody besmeared room and quan
tities of broken farnitare are left the
woman whose house was eo easily en
tsred and it is evident that Mr. Gra
ham put up a bard tight for bis life

Washington, Sept. 20, —The President
appointed Colonel Jamas M. Ball of the
Eighth cavalry and president of tbe
military board review, brigadier gen
eral, vice Brigadier General Ludlow,
deceased.

TO MRS. R. M. LATIMER AS AN EVI
DENCE OF APPRECIATION FELT FOR
HUSBAND WHOWAS MURDERED BY
SERVING THE COMPANY.
Through Col. W. E. Kay, their
attorney, the Southern Railway Go. on
yesterday paid to Mrs. R. M. Lstimer
$500.00 in cash.
This amount was given as a taken of
the appreciation felt by the company
for the services rendered them by Con.
ductor R M. Latimer, who was klllad
in the discharge of his duties by Trlcy
Griffin, the negro who was recently
hanged here for the crime.
Ii addition to this amount the South
ern Railway paid all the funeral and
other expemes attendant, upon the trial
snd conviotion of the murderer Griffin.
The tribute was worthily bestowed
and the many friends of Mrs, Latimer
will bo pleased to laarn of it.
MRS. HUNTLEY DEAD.
Was a Woman Very Well Known in Court
Circles.

Mrs. Huntley, alias Mrs. Eddy and
other naans, died here a lew days ago
and was buried in the now cemetery.
Baa had a career in life that made her
name familiar in court circl.s ard was
known hre first as a procuress and
later as a vendor of fish and crabs,
milk and vegetables.
After a life of visclssitados her bent
and aged form was fore, and to toil like a
slave fur sustenance a°d bo’ death was
perhsps a relief frim what had proven
worse than an sxistence here.
