NOVEMBER 12. 1901 HU IS SHIELDS ID M WE Couvicls Captnre alansas Sheriff Hill Slim IS ID Two of the Escaped Prisoners Get Out of a Tight Place By a Nervy Play. Topeka, Kan., Not. 11.—Sheriff Cook anil Deputy Sheriff Wiliam*, of thle county, were ospfured yeaUr day by two escaped convicts from the Fort Leaven war. h military prison at Pauline, five mi.ee auu h of Topeas, and held prisoners in tb farm hous of a man named Wooster for several hours The oonviots finally escaped between a iine of police sent from Topeka to reinforce the sheriff, and are now at large. Both were slightly wounded. Wooster was badly wounded by one of the ccnv-ots when he tried to fire on them. Mrs Wooster aDd Sheriff Conk were held before the conviots as a shield by the prisoners in making their escape. A posse is in pursnit. The adven'nre of the Topeka officers was quite as thrilling and hair-raising as that of any dime novel hero e’rer oreated by the most weird of the yellow back au.hors. Sheriff Cook and Deputy Williams learned that two of the escaped cor viers were in the vicinity of Pauline, five miles south of Topeka. Hastily forming a large posse, they qoi<. > made their way to Pauline. The posse located tbe oonvicts and fired upon tbem, wounding both men but not disabling tbem. Tbe oonvicte It id and ran into Farmer Wooetet’s bouse. Sheriff Cook, thinking tbe oonviots had mo around the bouse, rushed into the building, only to be seized by tbe two desperadoes. He was made to give up bis arms. Closely following him came Deputy Sheriff Williams. He, too, wa9 taken captive and disarmed. In tae meant me Cbiet Stahl, of To* oeka, and eigbc t ftieers were on tbeir way. They arrived at the Wooster boose about an boar after tbe t fiioers had been imprisoned. Chief Stahl immediately began negotiations with the oonviots to give up their prisoners and to sur render themselves, but tbe convlots only laughea. Farmer Wooster then managed to get a gun and was about to make an attaok on the oonviots wben one of ihem laid him low with a blow from :he bait of a revolver taken from one of tbeir captives. The oonrict broke Wooster’s right hand and made an ugly gash in hie bead. One of the convicts told Sheriff Cook that he would be killed if be made the slightest move looking toward ihelr capture, In the meantime the polioe ofticers oo the enteide had sarronnded the baildiog, bnt were afraid to make a move for fear that Cook and Williams would suffer. Mrs. Wooster bad fainted during the excitement. Bhe iloally revived and at 7 o’clook the convicts placed the woman '■ and sheriff in front of them as shields and made for the door. Theo, after exacting a promise from the sheriff (hat be would not permit any of the officers outside to fire oo them, they started for the oppu. A* they left the hou?e, the frightened farmer, his wife, and the submissive sheriff before them, the oonviots passed between a cordon of police wbo easily could have captured them, and started for the rai’road track. The sheriff, in turn, had exaoted a promise from the polioe that they would not molest the conyiots and they d>d not. J After covering a considerable dis tance down the track the ooovlcts sud denly disappeared through a hedge fence bidding the officers a m. eking farewell.
