Thomas* meeting of citizens and voters heid at the city bell laH night was entirely harmonious, being com posed for tte most part of those not wholly satisfied with tbe ticket already named. Tbere waa probably sixty-Uve or seventy-five present and besides naming a ticket tbe most important business transacted was tbe election of an xeoutive oocimitteo to determine whether mass meetings or primary elections shall Tie held to nominate persons for the offle of mayor and alderman hereafter. The meeting was called to order end Col. D, W- Kaanes wae eleoted chair*, man and Mr. T. w. Causey secretary. The following platform was intro duced by Mr, J. B. Djyis and adopted nnacimously: "We, citizens of Brunswick, in mast meeting assembled adopt the following as onr platform, touching issues that will oome before tbe aldmnsnio hoard next year, having no purpose saving tbe best interest of tbe city and its taxpayers at heart: "Ist. We hava no wish or pnrpcse to be extreme or to rush onr city into experiments; but we pledge ourselves to promote the business, financial aud moral welfare of tbe oity. ‘2nd. Wb are first aro last opposed to the rnnning of a 'wide open town’ wiiioh in the pas. among other tilings included a saloon down stairs, a brothei up£etairs and al! ronud wide open house. '‘3rd, We are not runmcg a prohibit 'i >n campaign; bur we do advocate the restriction of tb- barroom bush ess to certain localities, where proper police regulations anu re?triotione can be thrown around them. We are opposed to the extreme low license of S2OO. and advocate a raice in the lioense so as to if possible reatriot the business to tbe better class and respeotable people. We advocate the refusal of an/ liquor lioense whatever to the habitual viola* tor of the ordinances of the city and tbe laws of tbe state, which we believe wculd teed to tbe lessening of bo man/ expensive trials in the superior and oity courts, to the ooet of the taxpayers, and the upbuilding of the morals, par ticularly of the young men of the oily. "4'h, Furthermore, we are heartily in favor of Ibe no aoreen law as to saloons, and reasonable hours of open - ing and oiosing such places of business from sa. m. to 10 p, m.. tbe year round. “stb. First, last and all the time we are unalterably opposed to tbe reopan ir.g and the resuscitation of tbs plaoe commonly known as ‘Hell’s Half Acre’ where it wss, cr anywhere else, and we call upon too responsible lCloisls to break up this netarions gathering ol criminals and to rid onr city of this pest ss has bier, done in Jacksonville andoihc: cities. “Cih. We approve and commend the efforts which have been mad by the present admmisration to place the city in a safe Gnancid condition. We com mend the present chief of police and congratulate tbe oity upon having in this office one *h > is ready to stand by his oa b of office. “7tb. We favor beautifying tbe oity ana improving tbu sidewalks, streets ana parks, in so far aa tne oity a moans will permit. We particularly urge the paving of Newcastle street at the ear liest p'aotioable moment with some material better than tbe old standby, ojster shells, believing in the long run it would he better and cheaper to the city, owing to the . necessity for fre quent repairs. "Btb, We present a platform which wt feel the great majority of tbe oitizena Jjf Brunswick oan advocate; and we present as nominees for the aldermanio places gentlemen who are upright and honorable in all tbo walks of i<fe, reasonable and sensible men who will do tbe Bigot thing, und in their hands the affairs of the oity will be safe. We oall npon al! good citizens to rally to them and elsor, them,” Mi’. R. E, Guy introduced the fol lowing resolution: resolved by this mass meeting ofoitizene that while wc advooate a primary election for tbe nomination of municipal ofli,.ers as Is done in othei oities, at present the time is too short to call suh primary before the election in Deoombsr. Be it resolved further tbat we there fore proceed to nominate an aiaermanlc tioket to be balloted for in tno election to be held in December. Tbe aldermanic ticket as named aud elected stands: W. M. H. H, McAllister. T. J. Wright,, E, F. Coney, H B. Johnson, O. *yia mes, J. C Calhoun. R. B Hopkins, Mr. R E Suerman introduced tha following, whioh was unanimously car ried : ‘‘Be It resolved, By tbis mass meet* ing of citizens, that we do not feel bound to snppoit the nominee. Mr. W. S. Taylor, claimed to have been nomin ated oy a mass mooting held on the 27th of Ootoher, for tbe following reasons: The objaot of that meeting was alleged hr.r-nony; those of ns in tbis mass meeting wnc attended ttat nesting asked for and urged the nomin ation of a oitizso frieudly tons; two or three on the committee of fifteen sent out to nominate objected to onr can didate or to any me fuverea by ue. Mr. Tayloi was finally Suggested, tvbo war. himself cue of the committee of fifteen; Mr Taylor insisted that he would not accept unless the nomina tion was made unanimous; the vote In in the oommittee room stood a and 6, tbe chairman not voting; no harmony prevailed in the oommittee room; the mass msecing was about to discharge committee and nominate In open mass meet i eg; the oommittee reported nominating Mr. Taylor; a motion was made to disagree to the report of tbe oommittee; and wae declared by the chairman to be by a majority of three or four votes, Mr. Taylor has never accepted the tbe alleged nomination; beside* we feel tlist r im jority of tbe legal voters present in .ust mass meet ing was against the report of the com mittee as made. Therefore harmony not having been obtained, Mr. Tarlor not having accents 1 a nnartmoue nom ination by the committee of fifteen, and tost report we think nut having been sustained by a mejarity of tbe legal voters present, ws feel we are not bonod by the action of the former mass meet ing." On motion the meeting then ad journed. MINERS IN BLOODY BATTLE. Kentucky Strikers Attack Guards and Are Repulsed.
