Stirs Up Warm Debate On
Mlstrictiis
WORK BEGUN BY COMMITTEE
Miller Says Wishes of Congressmen
of No Great Importance.—
Subcommittee Named
Yesterday morning’s Atlanta Con*
stitution eays;
“The indications are that there is Inn
ahead of the congressional reappor
tionment oommittee.
“The first meeting of the joint oom
mittee was held yeeterday in the room
of the secretary of the senate. Organ
ization was perfeoted by the eleotion
of Hon. B. 8. Miller, of soogee, as
obairman of the joint committee. Mr.
Welborn, of Union, acted as secretary}
It was deoided that a quorum of the
joint committee should consist of seven*
teen.
' The first question of interest was
the appointment of a subcommittee to
take under oonsidertion the question of
re-apportionment and to report a plan
baok to the joint oommittee as soon as
possible. There was considerable dif
ference of opinion as to how many
should constitute this oommittee, some
thinking that a oommhtee of thras or
five oould gat through with ths work
morequiokly than a larger one.
‘-It was finally decided that eaoh con
gressional distriot should have a repre
sentation on the eub-eommtttee and
that this oommittee should oonsist of
lour senators and seven representa
tives,
“Chairman Miller will appoint this
subcommittee today and under the
resolution adopted the senate members
will report to the senate committee and
the honse members to the bouse com
mittee. Each committee will thus con
sider the matter separately. This work
will hare to be done with expedition as
Chairman Miller is determined to push
the matter as rapidly as possible, and
will oall another meeting of the joint
committee oAThureday night,probably
at the Kimball honse.
“Mr. Symons, of Glynn, represent
ing the Eleventh, Congressman Brant
ley’s distriot, introduced a reeol''j..
declaring it to be the sense of the com
mtttee that there should be no change
in any of the eongressional districts;
that there is no neoessity for it and tfaa
they should be left just as they are at
present.
‘'This resolution stirred ap a warm
debate. Mr. Wright, of Djughercy,
and Mr. Houston, of Falton, both
wanted the resolution acted on at once.
They were opposed to it, they said, bnt
they thought it should be acted on be*
oanse if the commltteee favored snob a
resolution there was no neoesslty for
taking op time figuring on a plan tbat
would not be adopted.
“Finally, after an extended discus
sion, on motion of Mr.Flynt.of Spald
ing, the resolution was tabled and the
whole matter was left to the sub-com
mittee to be named today, This com
mittee will start upon its work un
trammeled even by suggestion ”
Atlanta, Nov, 19—Chairman Millar*
of tha joint committee on redlstr ictiog
today named the sub-oommfitee as fol
lows:
First distriot, Hitob; Seoond district,
Wight; Third distriot, Steed; Fourth
district, Miller; Fifth district, Stone;
Sixth distriot, Ellis of senate; Seventh
district. Tatum of senate; Eighth dis
trict, Barnett; Ninth district, Bell of
senate; Tenth distriot, Kelly; Eleventh
district, Stubbs,
THREE WILL ACCEPT,
One Candidate, Mr. Franklin Cannot Ac
cept Platform.
The action of the mass meeting held
Monday night, and {the tiokat put out,
was the principal theme of conversation
yesterday among Brunswiek citlaens.
IViere appearing to be aome question as
the gentlemon named would
aooept the nomination, a Times-Call
reporter endeavored to see tham and
gat thoir answer to the question.
Mr. W. R, Dart said he was not
looking for office but would aooept the
nomination and if elected would rep
resent all the people the best be oomld,
Mr. W. M. Tupper was not in the
oity bat it was learned from a gentle*
man who participated in the mass
meeting that there] was no question
about his acoepting the nomication.
Mr. A. L, Franklin when seen said
that bs would have no objaotion to ao
oeptiog the nomination but oould not
aocept the platform. He thought the
time had oome when oitlzens should
be eleoted to serve as aldermen without
a platform being laid down for them,
f
that there was some things in the
platform adopted Monday night that
were all right bnt there were others
he would not endorse, “For instance,
he said “I would not be willing to
bind myself as being in favor of rais
ing the litjoor iioense to more thaa
S2OO for one thing, that is a matter
that depends apon business conditions.”
Mr. C. L. Parker when oalled up
over the phone said be would aocept
the nomination.
“A DAY AND A NIGHT."
Spiced by Those Necessary Condiments,
Wit and Ginger.
Complications in the plot of a play
may prove Interesting to some bnt the
general publloare more easily amosed
by direot simplicity to engage their at>
tentlon, spiced by those necessary con
diments, wit and ginger. This latter
method has been adopted by Mr. Uoyt
when be wrote his side splitting come
dy, “A Day and A Night,” The faot

sweet and dashing melodies did not

selected with a view to their peculiar
fitness for the various parti, and their

Currie’s fine discrimination as to the
wants of an Amerioan public,
“A Day and A Night" is popular,
and deservedly so, beoause Its story is

The play will be presented at the

Dr. HeW. Wiley, chief chemist of
the department of agriculture at

with a view of determining the possi
bilities of sugar production in this
section.
Dr. Wiley left on a speoial

Thomasvlllv, Cairo and other points in
southwest Georgia. Today he will
address the Florida agricultural soolety
at the state fair at Jacksonville.
Dr. Wiley says that teats already
made show the Georgia cane to be 2
per oent rtofcer in sugar joontent than
the Louisiana cane. At Captain James’
plantation I)r. Wiley estimated tbe
care growing in the field at 25 tons to
tbe aore, which is in excess of the
Louisiana average. This inelinee Dr,
Wiley to believe that the outlook for
sugar production iu this seotion ia vary
favorable.
Dr. Wiley is expected here tomorrow
and will be entertained by officers and
members of tbe board of trade. Hs
will be taken to the oane fields near
Brunswick and will probably bars
something to say to the members of the
board of trade or the cane and cassava
assooiation. Just what the program
will be on tbe occasion of hie viait has
sot yet been determined.
