Tbe parade yesterday morning was one of the best ever witnessed here and drew large crowds to tbe streets along whioh it passed, There was no doartb of masio and the many Mae horses elicited much praise. The rain in tbe afternoon interferred somewhat wi'h people getting to tbe show grounds bat onoe under the big tents it mattered very little to the large andienoe. The program, which was along and varied, one included several noteworthy novelties, especially the a;t of professor Dockrill daring whioh sixty three horses are introduced and ■how some really remarkable fine training. The trapese acting and ae rial bar stunts were great, as were the difficult acrobatic feats. The show is well maoagpd and there la nothing in a O7 part of the perfor mance to offend the moat fastidious. From the time the grand entree be* gins until the last act there li al ways something going on in both of the ringe or on the raised platform in the center of the large tent. The collection of animals in the menagerie tent is large and embrace* some fine speoimens, The attendance at night was larger than in tbe afternoon and the perfor mance if anything was better. The show went to Baxley last night where two performances will be giren today. A HAPPY EVENT Friends Celebrate Mr. Ben Bochardt’s Birthday and His Betrothal is Announced. He Was Caught In a Whirling Belt and Severely Injured, The relatives and friends of Mr. Fred E. Way, a Brunswick boy now living in Savannah, were greatly shocked on Sunday morning to learn that he had met with what was thought at the time to be a fatal aooident, Mr. Way is employed by tbe Edison Eleotrie Illuminating company as a dynamo tender, and on Saturday met with an accident whioh may ooet him his life. Preparations were being made to start tbe dynamo when he was caught in one of tbe belts and whirled around a wheel and thrown to the tl >or with terrific foroe. His left arm was badly broken and torn and he may have sustained internal injuries. 1. seems that no one saw the acoident and it is not known just how it oocurred. The first intimation that anything was wrong was had when bis body struok the floor. He was apparently lifeless when picked np by hie fellow employes and the ambnlsnoe was summoned. The men in tbe power house were of the opinion that he would die before the hospital was reached, Mr, Way was taken to the Park View Sanitarium, and Mr, W. J. Way, his unole, who aooompanied his mother to Savannah and returned yesterday says that the dooto; s are much enoouraged by his present oondition. The broken arm has been set and the young man is conscious. His father and mother are at his aide and everything that medical skill can devise is being done. Mr. Way eaya hie nephew s body is one mass of bruises and he has tub? kept u- der tbe influence of opiates Tbe physicians are hopeful but cannot ascertain tbe 6xaot oondition of their patient nntil be reoovers from the awful shook of the terrible experience be went through and the operation of setting his broken arm. It will be sometime before they oan tell just what tif any internal injuries be has sus tained. Much sympathy was expressed by Mr, Way’s many friends in Brunswiok, who all wish him a speedy recovery, PANIC IN PRISON. Blaze in Virginia Penitentiary Causes Wild Confusion, Riohmond, Va., Dso. 2— Tue burning of a pile of straw in one of tbe cells of the Virginia penetenliary last evening threatened the destruction of tbe institatson, and threw its 1,200 in mates into the wildest exoitement, Tbe oity was thrown into a state of excitement by tbe turning in of the military call, this being done as a pre cautionary measure. Tbe military re sponded promptly. The blase occurred in one of the rooms used for solitary oonfinemsnt, and was deteoted so promptly that the attaobes practically put it out before the arrivrl of the department. The cenviets were thrown into tbe most intense exoitement. Their screams and yells were pitiable. They were brought out of their cells and as sembled in the court, but were so wrought up that they could hardly be oollected. With the arrival, however, of the military order was restored.
