May wheat touched Its record price for the crop ahortly before noon, selling at 80%, both for December and and May . Corn broke the records of a year's standing, December is selling at 65 and May at 68%. TRAIN THROUGH A TRESTLE. The Plant System Passenger Train Is Wrecked. Wsyeross, Deo. s—Train 32 from Jacksonville to Savannah, with throe Pullman, two passengar, and three baggage and express cara, jumped the track on a trestle over a canal half a mile after leaving Waycroas. The Pullman cars’ armaatdatandiib crash ed through the upper timbers of the trestle and were held suspended over the side by the lower timber*’ ends, both of the Pallman oars dropping five feet below the traok, Opinions d.iF-r as to whether it was cstierd by 'he train jamping the track or the trestle collapsing The Pallman oars were in the oentre of the train. Only three passengers were in the Pullman oars and none was hurt. The treßtle is 35 feet high and was nearly wrecked. NOT TO BE TAXED. Vessels From the Philippine Exempt From Tonnage Tax. Washington, Deo, s,—Hr. Chamber lain, commissioner of navigation, has issued a oiroular,in which collectors of customs throughout the Uaited States are direoted to exempt vessels from the Philippine Islands arriving in this country, from tbo tonnage tax levied uDder authority of the act of 1889. The vessels arriving from foreign ports via the Philippines or visiting foreign ports while on a voyage from the Philippines to the United States are still inbject to the tax. This action is taken under authority of reoent decis ions of the United States Supreme eourt in insular oases. TAX PAYERS. By resolution of connoil passed No vember 30th, an extension an-til De cember 20tb was granted for the pay- i ment of city taxes for 1901. This is for thejparpose of allowing those in ar rears an opportunity to settle with the treasurer without additional oosta. Last Effort Has Been Made for State Troops’ Appropriation. Savannah, Dee. 5 —The last shot has been fired in the battle for an appropri ation from the state for the Georgia state troops. A circular letter was sent nut from Savannah to every member or the state legislature exhorting voles and aid in the effort to secure an appropriation of $30,000. The oircular was prepared by Colonel W. E. Coney, adjutant of the First infantry, who 6eonred the signatures of ten commanding oiiioers of the state. The oircular makes a showing that, It is believed, will not be without effect. MANY HURT LAST NIGHT. Ereight Train Ran Into Passenger and Hurt Many.
