THE EVENING POST: TUESDAY. JULY 8. 1890.

Hall'a Century Behind.
I It is at least fifty years too late to
dispute the proposition that newspa
per advertising pays. The reverse may
have been true when Rip Van Winkle
went to sleep, but Rip has waked up,
and even “Schneider” can bark out the
truth to him. Not only does newspa
per advertising pay, but it pays well,
and on the whole better than it ever
did before.
A few years ago newspapers were
not what they are now. They were
fewer in number, and in all that char
acterizes good newspaper management
they were inferior to tiie newspapers
of the present day. Remembering that
our allusion is chiefly to the papers of
the smaller cities and country towns,
no one who is fayniliar with the facts of
twenty-five years ago will dispute with
us when we say that, wonderful as has
beeimiuch of the progress of the last
two or three decades, theadvanceln re
spect to our newspapers has not been
surpassed in any other direction.
In the days of the past advertising
paid. Conspicuous incidents of men
who grew rich by early perception of
die advantages of newspaper advertis
ng readily come to mind, while the
•ruth tint thousands of persons who
achieved no personal celebrity made
.mndsomo profits by the same means
:an be easily shown.
In this day the newspapers have
much to commend them which they
did not then possess. They are better
printed, for one thing; they are more
prosperous and have abetter commer
cial standing, for another. The papers
of the class specially referred to have
at their command a reading matter
service which puts them fully on a
level, as to matter, with the most pros
perous metroplitan daily. And so an
advertiser, when presenting his an
nouncement for insertion, may feel
confident that his advertisement will
be printed in good company, and,
since these are also the times of per
fected printing machinery, in good,
legible form also.
Therefore since newspaper adver
tising lias always paid, even in the
day when newspapers were, by com
parison, (swirly printed an.l only mod
erut< ly edited, the business man is
standing in lii.sown light and easting
the blackest kind of a shadow if he is
not a student and a liberal user ftf
new paper advertising.
